A NIMAL S UTRAS
Stephen Levine offers a beautiful collection of stories for the heart, weaving his personal experiences with animals and the teachings gleaned from those experiences. Animals, through their natural instinctive behavior and closer connection to the natural world, serve to remind us that we too are creatures of natureand, in spite of our intellect and self-reflective consciousness, we too are instinctual beings. You will thoroughly enjoy these tales and carry their lessons with you in a way that opens your heart and mind to the teachings from the animals. This small treasure of a book is about the better animals of our nature. Whether it is forgiveness from a salamander, stillness from a green snake, the acknowledgement of territories by a spider or mindfulness by ravens, over and over these stories lead us, too, to realize the primacy of kindness as the way for all of us to help each other to arrive at wellbeing. Ajahn Chah used to say, Everything is teaching us, if we let it. This slender volume carries that exact same message. The lesson might be sweet, like the results of practicing patience in caring for a sick cat, or it might be bitter, like the witnessing of a weeping bull before an impassioned crowdeither way, how much better our world will be if we allow the animals of our own nature to learn from the life that is all around us. A beautifully wise and whimsical book that brings us back into our hearts and connects us with the everything. Many authors talk about mindfulness, but we are left unaffected. Stephen has a magical way of bringing us into the experience itself. Even from the beyond, he calls us home to ourselves. As I read his poignant stories, I was reminded of what really mattered. I am grateful for this brilliant offering. J EFF B ROWN, AUTHOR OF Soulshaping and Grounded Spirituality

French poet and novelist Anatole France wrote: Until one has loved an animal, a part of ones soul remains unawakened. Spiritual teacher Eckart Tolle says, I have lived with several Zen mastersall of them cats. French writer Milan Kundra says, Dogs are our link to Paradise. They dont know evil or jealousy or discontent. Jewish philosopher Martin Buber wrote: An animals eyes have the power to speak a great language. These words all ring true to me, as the animals in my own life have been wise teachers, loyal companions, and loving friends. I know what Stephen Levine means when he talks about his life becoming truer due to the interchange with plants and animals, mercy and awareness. Mine, too. Im happy and grateful that Stephen wrote this wonderful book. I love it! BJ G ALLAGHER, COAUTHOR OF A Peacock in the Land of Penguins: A Fable About Creativity and Courage
Stephen Levines Animal Sutras resonates at the deepest level of heart and soul, invoking memories of our own joyful and painful experiences with the four-legged, winged, finned, and slithering. His vivid prose delights, as he reveals profound insights on the relationship between all sentient beings. This meaningful collection will move you from teary-eyed to grinning like a Cheshire cat as he lovingly describes his wonder-filled menagerie. Things are quiet here. Spring begins to overflow into the valley and crawls up the side of the mountain. The buzzards and the hummingbirds have noticed, returning about an hour apart. The seasonal stream is trickling. Coyotes run the ridge with new cubs. And something greater than us all calls to us to make peace in the torn world, to learn to love even when we are in pain, even when we are frightened, to consider the wellbeing of others as we might that of our own children, and the prayer becomes May All Beings Be Free From Suffering, May All Beings Be At Peace.

T O TRULY LOVE, and to be loved, is the hearts greatest desire; to show and to receive compassion, especially when in the midst of feeling deep grief and pain, is one of our most exigent needs. Yet this hallowed space of love and compassion is sometimes overlaid with the complexities of modernity; demands on our time; a lack of attention and awareness; past wounds that quietly follow the unawakened heart; and, ultimately, a sense of disconnection from self, other, and the space between. This space between self and other, and the sutra that unifies all beings, is hallowed space.
There is perhaps no more elegiac narrative of this sacred Oneness than Stephen Levines Animal Sutras . Stephenat a cellular levelunderstood that what we do to the other, even the animal other, we also do to ourselves and to our kin. This beautiful yet painful truth is hidden beneath the disconnected hedonism and materialism of our world. To speak this truth is both brave and necessary for our species, for all beings, and for our planet.
And so, in this posthumously published book, with tenderness and verity, Stephen invites readers into the mystical space of connection with all that is, all that has ever been, and all that will ever be on this Earth that we call home. Animal Sutras is an open-hearted and vulnerable, even apologetic and at times humorous, exploration of our essential connection to our four-legged, winged, and crawling brethren. Few mystics and even fewer scholars have sought to understand the mystical import of animals in the cultivation of meaning and purpose in our lives. The intimate relationship between animals, the natural world, and humans underlies the very matrix of our existence, yet too many humans remain asleep, unaware of what Stephen called its elemental presence. This presence contains the consciousness of Oneness, the open secret that calls to us, and there is a grace and mercy inherent in answering that call. Stephen, over and over again throughout his life, willingly turned toward and answered that call.
