There is a lot we can do with our mental efforts to alter the machinery of the brain. We now know that cognitive training empowers us to alter the hunger mechanism of the brain so that we can effectively prevent ourselves from habitual and mindless overeating.

First and foremost, I want to thank my editor, Deb Werksman, for believing in a first-time author with a new idea.
I want to thank my dear friend, Carol Russell, who was the first person to read the manuscript and gave me the encouragement to move forward with this project. Since that time, the support and suggestions from my parents, Bruce and Jacque Buehler, and my daughter, Kallie Hapgood, have been invaluable. In addition to the aforementioned, the following friends played a major role in helping me bring this book to you: Jane Luellen, Jay Allbaugh, Kevin Brown, Reuben Saunders, Bonnie Bing, Kim Herres, Jamie Coulter, Greg Buell, Susan Herbel, Terry OToole, Janet Neitzel, Gary Krause, Fun ONeal, Karen Rogers, Jon and Myrna Roe, Fay Yates, and Andrea Taylor.
To all of them I express my love and gratitude.

Changing Your Focus
Ive learned that you can look to people and programs for
inspiration to jump-start yourself, but you have to develop a plan
that will work for your life. There are no shortcuts or secrets,
no magic patches or pillsYouve got to love yourself and do the
work it takes to sustain your most powerful engine: good health.
Without it, nothing else matters.

Self-discipline burns away impurities
and kindles the sparks of divinity.

Are you tired of not having any clothes that fit? Is being discriminated against because of your weight creating problems for you? Do you tire easily when chasing your kids or grandkids around the yard? Do you have better things to spend your money on than another fad diet book or diet pill? Do you envy people who are of average weight? Do you never want to diet again? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, keep reading.
It has been eighteen years since I introduced this weight loss program to my first patient. Since then, I have helped hundreds of people lose weight and keep it off. Most of them had tried numerous diets that failed. My program, however, motivated individuals to become responsible for their own success and to be the controller of their weight and not give up control to a pill or a fad diet. My program is not so much about eating as it is about thinking. It is about your attitude, your body, and your approach to life in general. It can instill in you a new appreciation of your bodyone that allows you to embrace, value, and delight in your body even if it is not rail thin. I want you to learn to view eating and nurturing your body as a pleasurable, guilt-free endeavor, while at the same time losing weight.
And it works. My success can become your success.
There is no question in my mind that anyone who is overweight would like to lose weight. Even people who claim to be fat and happy deep down really do want to lose weight despite their protests to the contrary. Fear of failure, avoidance of the possible difficulty of losing weight, or rebellion against the establishment, spouse, or parents leads them to claim that they dont want to lose weight. Think Yourself Thin is, among other things, a compilation of experiences with many patients. Their real-life experiences and feedback have helped me to figure out which methods really work, including hypnosis and self-hypnosis scripts.
At the end of most of the following chapters, you will find a self-hypnosis script that reinforces the concepts in that particular chapter. The self-hypnosis scripts will help you make the necessary changes by incorporating the suggestions given in the chapter at a deeper level. The included hypnosis compact disc is designed to reinforce everything that is written in this book and to put an end to your struggle to keep weight off permanently. The CD will begin to effect changes in your subconscious mind immediately, which will empower your conscious mind to change your brain, your behavior, and ultimately your life. You will want to begin listening to the hypnosis CD at least once a week as soon as you can.
