Acknowledgments
A publication of this kind is possible only because of the combined support of many individuals. No single person could have carried out the research and writing necessary for the production of this collection of essays.
First Edition, 1994
First, of course, there would be no book without the contributions of the twenty-five authors who prepared the essays that form its text. The efforts of others should be recognized as well.
The idea of preparing a publication to coincide with the celebration, in 1994, of the one hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the American Institute of Architects in Seattle and Washington State was initiated and supported beginning in 1991 by Norman J. Johnston, FAIA, professor emeritus at the University of Washington, and Marga Rose Hancock, executive vice president of AIA Seattle.
The Editorial Board, which includes Dennis Alan Andersen, Duane A. Dietz, Katheryn Hills Krafft, David A. Rash, and Thomas Veith, was formed in mid-1991. This group met regularly over more than two years and was responsible for determining the architects to be included, identifying potential authors, establishing guidelines, reviewing submissions, and preparing the gazetteer of additional architects. In addition, members of the Editorial Board carried out their own research and were responsible for a significant number of the essays. All of the essays were subject to an intensive review by members of this Board and by anonymous reviewers in the fashion typical of scholarly publications.
Supplemental assistance by several individuals must be recognized. Without their efforts this book would not have approached its present level of accuracy, completeness, and consistency. David A. Rash provided additional factual information and references for many essays, Dennis Alan Andersen provided assistance in locating photographs for some of the essays, and Duane A. Dietz made available his catalogue of Seattle architects and landscape architects as the basis for beginning with the listing of the additional architects. Finally, the editorial and format consistency throughout is due in large part to the efforts of Thomas Veith.
Others who helped in the production of this work in many important ways include Richard Engeman, Gary Menges, Kristen Kinsey, Sandra Kroupa, and Carla Rickerson at Special Collections, University of Washington Libraries; Rick Caldwell and Carolyn Marr at the Library of the Museum of History and Industry, Seattle; Jodee Fenton and others at the Seattle Public Library; and Paul Dorpat. In addition, T. William Booth took photographs of many buildings for which historical photographs could not be found.
