Introduction
O nline teaching is not something new as it has been in existence for many decades. However, its technology came not too long ago. The idea behind it has always been in existence as far back as 170 years ago. The origin of online teaching and education is in a correspondence course that was being offered in the UK. In the course, the instructor will send lessons to students and receive their assignments through mails.
Then, it was considered as distance learning. It was this idea that propelled the modern idea of online teaching. Online learning gives room for students to interact with one another, and this creates another classroom, which is virtual. One of the primary goals of education is the promotion of life-long learning. This means that education must always motivate people to want to learn and gather knowledge. Even outside school, students should be interested in learning.
It is now the sole responsibility of teachers to make an effort to develop learning among their students. They can do this by setting up effective classroom management, which researchers have found out to be essential in the process of maximizing the learning abilities of students by teachers. The creation of an intranet by the University of Illinois for students in 1960 was the first move that launched the surfacing of online teaching in modern ways.
The intranet was designed to help students gain access to online materials and listen to recorded lectures. Intranet later evolved into PLATO, which means: Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations. PLATO gained a global reach operating in various terminals. It was later used to develop many of the social networking features, such as chat rooms, message boards, screen sharing, etc. that we now use today. Right from the creation of the intranet, many other institutions worked tirelessly to promote online learning. The result is what we currently have today with a lot of online tools made available for teaching and learning online.
However, there have been many opinions from educators and teachers against the use of the internet to teach. One of the educators that spoke vehemently against the use of online teaching is Mark Edmundson, a professor of English at the University of Virginia. In his opinion, he claimed that teachers need to see their students physically to understand their physical, emotional, and intellectual needs. This is what will help the teacher to know how best to help them. He further claimed that teaching is dialogic. And this is what allows students to grasp the ideas explained in each class easily. For Mark, online teaching is in monologue, and it is a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching, which is not adequate. He emphasized on the need to create a community of learning between teachers and their students.
Nonetheless, there are several reasons for adopting online learning, especially in a period of an epidemic like this. The presence of the coronavirus ravaging our world has revealed another reason for online teaching. Aside from other reasons for adopting the online means of education, the undesirable isolation that we are presently going through necessitates the need for its global adoption. Generally, teaching online has the following benefits:
It Creates time flexibility: Online teaching makes learning easy. It creates flexibility in time for both the teacher and the students. Students can easily learn at their productive hours. It allows students to approach learning based on their pace by following a certain framework designed for the study. Also, flexibility is reflected in the easiness of breaking the syllabus down into smaller units that the students can easily learn.
Increased location flexibility: Students can now learn without necessarily being confined in their classrooms. Even the teacher can set up his or her lectures in the comfort of his or her room. These benefits help to achieve a goal of educationto promote life-long education. Despite the isolation and school closure policies, which serve as measures against the deadly coronavirus, students can still learn as much as they would have learned in their classrooms.
It creates a practical context: By learning online, students will begin to see novel relevance to their contemporary society. They will start to gain access to professional and industrial practices, which is one thing they need outside of school.
It eases the process of Information Sharing: Both students and teachers can now share information easily and readily. They will also gain access to more information by joining other online learning platforms. This makes learning more practicable.
It provides enriching and diverse experience : Learning online enhances students' experience. It does this by providing them with opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and cultures. This learning opportunities can occur at both the local and national levels.
There are many more reasons we should adopt online teaching. At present, it will help to cater for the lack of contact learning we are supposed to be having ongoing in schools. Rather than making students go for months without any educational activity. It is best to bring them to the virtual learning space where they will gain a lot and get themselves prepared for the real world.
