Set your course by the stars, not by the lights of every passing ship.

Each of us has a Big Wavea dream that seems to be at the edge of whats possible for us, resonates deeply in our hearts, would require us to concentrate all our energy to accomplish, andif successfulwould transport us beyond who we thought we were. Thing is, often theres a lot of fear standing between us and that dream. Theres action that has to be taken between determining a goal and conquering it. And thats where most people get stuck.
The Big Wave Method maps out eight steps to overcoming our fear and making our vision realsteps I developed that helped me conquer my own Big Wave: night-surfing at Jaws in Maui, the most treacherous wave in the world.
Just like me, you likely have an extraordinary dream or goal that you believe is possiblebut its still big enough to feel slightly out of reach. I hope youll see my story as an inspirational boost for your dream that offers inspiration as well as step-by-step advice, whether youre a fledgling entrepreneur, a first-time marathon runner, an amateur filmmaker, or a would-be author. You know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you have a uniquely creative dream to fulfilla worthy goal to achieve. That said, this method is equally applicable to the businesspeople I often encounter at my corporate speaking events: C.E.O.s, bankers, lawyers, doctors, and coaches who stand in line to confide in me about their hopes, fears, and big ideas about taking their business to the next level.
The Big Wave Method is the perfect companion for anyone who needs inspiration to take the big risk and do the big thing; anyone who is afraid theyll look back at their life and say, I could have done something extraordinary. Why didnt I try?
Dont take your dreams to the graveyard with you. Set them free, and set yourself free in the process.
No matter the dream, no matter the size, there is always a method to achieving what seems impossible.
Are you ready?
One of the virtues of being very young is that you dont let the facts get in the way of your imagination.

Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being as fast and as tall as Michael Jordan. But when I asked my mum if I was going to be six-six and be like Mike, she told me I wouldnt. I remember thinking, This really sucks.
I thought if I was not going to be above-average genetically or have other physical attributes of these other people that I worshipped like Muhammad Ali or other professional sports people Id seen on TV, then I was going to have to settle for an average life. When I looked around, I saw other people excelling at the things they wanted to do. I also assumed they had something I didntsome secret edge, a gift, or a lot of money that made them appear successful.
I also noticed at a very young age that many successful athletes had overcome difficult childhoods or backgrounds, and that gave them a hunger that drove them to be successful. Others seemed to have been brought up with a silver spoon, given every opportunity. Though I wanted to succeed in life and had a great imagination, I couldnt relate to either of those extremes; I didnt have a difficult background, and I didnt come from a wealthy home.
Over and over, Id think to myself, What if Im just a normal person? Could I get far in life just being normalbeing myself? Could I do something really special too? I had never heard a success story of someone who was normal. I just knew I wanted to do amazing things, so Id have to find a wayor make one.
The third of four kids, I wasnt the first, and I wasnt the last. I was there in the middle, superaverage in a way among my family. Maybe it is the middle-kid syndrome, or maybe I just knew I was meant to do more.
And apparently I was a stubborn kid.
