T o define emotional intelligence (EI) as being aware of one's emotions and knowing how to control those emotions to build fruitful and empathetic relationships doesn't give you the full picture. The beauty in studying EI is to understand how to develop and use that emotional intelligence to improve your life. My goal in this book is to take you through the steps of how to do just thatto identify, develop and heighten your emotional intelligence to create stronger personal and professional relationships.

For clarity, lets take emotional intelligence beyond its definition and step into a greater understanding of what EI can do for you. Perhaps the best way to bring clarity to the term "emotional intelligence" is first to dispel some of its mysteries and myths. Emotional intelligence is NOT a personality trait. People who have high EI aren't necessarily optimistic, agreeable, or always happy. EI goes deeper than your outward personality; it's almost like having an inherent ability to perceive emotions and respond in a way that benefits all parties. It's learning how to feel emotions, not just be able to identify or recognize them. Having high emotional intelligence is knowing how to harness emotional energy and turn it into predictable and positive outcomes.
