WRITING TO CHRONICLE

Creating solid self-confidence (technique 12)

When to use: when you need to create solid self-confidence and self-belief and develop resilience.

Instructions:

Write down your lifetime successes

Step 1: Take stock of the nine major, breakthrough successes youve experienced in your life.

Step 2: Divide your life up to this point into three equal periods. For example:

Your age: 42

  • First third of my life: birth to age 14
  • Second third of my life: age 15 to 28
  • Third stage of my life: age 29 to present

Another example: if youre 27 years old

  • First third of my life: birth to age 9
  • Second third of my life: age 10 to 19
  • Third stage of my life: age 20 to present

Step 3: For each time period, write down the three major successes youve experienced. List down what you feel is a win or a successful, victorious outcome.

Three things you did well today

Step 1: Every night, before you retire, set aside 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 2: Take out your journal or notebook.

Step 3: Write down the three things you did well that day. Again, as with the above technique, it doesnt matter whether what you did well that day is small or big, major or minor.

Daily win log

Step 1: Write down all your wins for the day.

Step 2: Write down how and why you are grateful for each one of them.

Step 3: Do this technique mindfully.

  • Relive the feelings of victory you felt when you scored these successes.
  • When you do appreciation writing, feel truly grateful and overjoyed at the things you appreciate in your life.

My 101 lifetime successes

Preparation:

Before you start this technique, remind yourself that you are already a winner and that you are continuing to win in life. You can write this out as a short statement and write it at the start of your list.

Step 1: Divide your life into about 5 or 6 periods and then write about 15 to 20 successes for each period.

  • If it makes it easier, write the date or at least the year when you experienced this victory.

Step 2: After each item, write a statement to remind yourself how much of a winner and a victor you are.

  • For example: I am successful, I am accomplished; I am distinguished; I can do great things; I am respected and accomplished.

Step 3: As you write each item, try to recall the feelings of winning and success that you felt when you achieved those victories.

  • Relish and savor the delicious feelings and sensations you felt at each of those moments.
  • And as you do so, remind yourself of a simple truth: I am already a winner!

Step 4: List down your wins, both spectacular and humble, big and small.

Step 5: Finish your list and write your 101 st success or victory

Step 6: Read over your list of victories from time to time.

  • As you do, remind yourself constantly that you are already greatly successful, that you are victorious in life.
  • Acknowledge that that there will be countless other victories, wins and breakthroughs waiting for you in the future.

Charting Your Heros Journey (technique 13)

When to use: when needing guidance in life from patterns of the universal human story; when you want to prove that you are an everyday hero.

Instructions:

Preparation: read the positive statements below, which briefly describe each stage of the heros journey. Then think about the questions under each stage of the heros journey. Reflect and write your answers in your journal. If you come to other realizations as you reflect on each stage, then write those down too.

Stage 1: The Ordinary World

Before I can enter a higher level of life, I must first live in the ordinary world. Apart from my actual environment, the ordinary world can also represent my comfort zone, conditioned beliefs and behaviors.

  • What does the ordinary world look like for me?
  • What is my current comfort zone?
  • Do I feel like Im going through my current life in a daze, like I am just going through the motions of living?
  • Am I living my life bored, listless, without any passion or excitement?

Stage 2: My Call to Adventure

The Call to Adventure is a call for me to leave the ordinary world and travel to a special one, a world in which I will be actualizing all my potential as a person, and using my gifts and talents to become the best version of myself and serve humanity and the world.

  • Do I feel an urge to do something out of the ordinary in my life? In my work? In my relationships? In my living arrangements?
  • Do I sense that I need to change something in my life or the way Ive been living it?
  • Is there something I know I must do that will serve my highest good as a person, but which I am resisting?
  • Is there an important decision that could potentially change my life (and by extension my familys life) for the better, which I am afraid to make or am putting off?
  • Do I feel the need to get out of my comfort zone and venture into an unknown, but exciting, future?
  • Do I have a grand vision for my life, in which I am existing as the best possible version of myself, in which the different areas of my life have reached their highest levels?
  • Is there something that my heart is pulling me to do but which my brain is discouraging me from doing because its unrealistic, impractical or will never work?

Stage 3: Meeting my Mentors

At one point in my quest, someone unexpectedly comes along offering me aid, assistance or encouragement that could help me travel farther or overcome the challenges and obstacles blocking my path. I dont know when the mentor will appear but I have faith that he or she will come when I am ready.

  • Are there any people in my life right now who know the mission Ive decided to take and are already helping me in some way to succeed in it?
  • Am I accepting or refusing their offer of aid?
  • Who are the people whose help, knowledge, wisdom, talents, skills or resources I will need to help me achieve my goals?
  • If a potential mentor is present, what actions can I take to get them to know and help me?
  • Can I seek help, wisdom or advice from my higher self or inner guidance system?

Stage 4: Crossing the First Threshold

Once I go through the first door or cross the first bridge, it bursts into flames. I cannot turn back, at least not the way by which I came.

  • What major decision can I make right now that would represent the first step out of my comfort zone and toward my envisioned life?
  • What one powerful action can I take right now that would show that I am committed to moving toward my big goals?
  • What one act am I afraid or even terrified of doing but which I know, if I did it, will represent a breakthrough in my life and in my goals?

Stage 5: My Road of Trials

Along my heros journey, I expect to encounter many obstacles and challenges. I anticipate facing many foes, whether human, material, situational or circumstantial, all intent on stopping me from completing my journey and finding my treasure. This comes as no surprise. I expect this because I acknowledge that adversity is how the universe tests my commitment to succeed in my journey.

  • What obstacles lie between me and the higher vision I have seen for my life?
  • What challenges are hindering me from taking further steps toward my goals?
  • Are there people who are trying to stop me from moving forward in my quest?
  • Are there any circumstances, situations, conditions or factors that are making it difficult for me to continue moving toward my goals?

Stage 6: The Dragons Den

The next threshold is often more challenging or treacherous than the first. This could involve a second major decision that I take along my heros journey; it could put me at significant physical and psychological risk. But I also realize that within the walls of my darkest, innermost cave also lies the cornerstone of the special world I am trying to reach. I know that my goal is within reach.
