Nowadays most people are no longer content just to know mind can influence body. They are eager to understand the ability to know it well enough to feel it and to use it to realise the best of their being.
DR BARBARA B. BROWN IN SUPERMIND
YES YOU CAN is not a book about how your mind works in the scientific sense. There are many outstanding books on that subject written by some of the worlds leading scientists. However, when you have read those books you will be no closer to being able to implement the powers of your mind than you would be able to drive a car after reading the mechanical manual about your particular car. The manual tells you what makes your car work the way it does, but you still have to learn which buttons to press, which wheels to turn and when to press and turn them in order to use the car for the purpose for which it was bought to transport you from place to place, to take you on a journey. The purpose of Yes You Can is to show you which buttons to press and wheels to turn in your mind so you can use the powers of your mind to reach your potential on the greatest of your journeys the journey of life.
Yes You Can is about focusing your attention on the unique person you are and on the great power you have within you to achieve your real potential as a human being. Once you have mastered this power you will be at peace with yourself. Life will take on new meaning, possibilities will emerge that once were only dreams and the grind of day-by-day living will be replaced by a dynamic purpose that will enrich your life and bring you happiness and prosperity on a scale you may now think impossible. Can you do all this? Yes You Can. In your way and your time, you can make it all come true simply by following the easy-to-understand principles of mind, time and goal management contained in this book.
Each of us is sustained by our ability to achieve goals which meet our expectations of life. When we do this successfully, we feel good. When we dont, we feel bad. Yet few of us ever pursue the question of how it all happens. We rarely ask ourselves: what is the nature of human achievement; how does it work; and how can I learn the basics so I can improve my chances in life? The major obstacle is belief. We seem to accept as a matter of course that two plus two equals four, that what goes up must come down, that water finds its own level, that matter expands when heated. We accept that the seasons change, the winds blow, the rain falls. We have no problem with the sun coming up in the morning and the moon rising at night, and we take for granted that both will rise in the east and set in the west. We accept these things as normal because we are familiar with them. We accept without question that these and many other marvellous events are governed by the laws of physics.
We accept that in nature there is order. We also need to accept that within the human mind there is also order and that human achievement is the result of the relationship between nature and the human mind. We are children of the universe, and each life is linked to all life, and within each of us is a life force, an enormous power, just waiting to be put to work. But it cannot work without direction. It doesnt run us, we run it. This power of achievement has been likened to a homing device on a guided missile. Activate it by goals and its off and running and while you sustain it by belief and support it by purposeful action, it will correct, adjust and do whatever is necessary to get you your goal. That is its function in your life.
Yet many of us either do not know of or do not believe in this marvellous life force within us. We fritter away the power because our purpose is aimless. We are without real commitment. We cannot focus and retain our attention on what is really important to us and, as a result, we never reach our true potential, and we squander the wonderful powers with which we were blessed at birth. We ignore the one great opportunity we have to make our life as successful, happy and beautiful as most of us hunger for. We were born to be rich, not poor. We were born to be happy, not sad, and we were born to succeed, not fail, yet by the way we think, we often create for ourselves the very opposite of that which we desire and could so easily have.
The major reason so few of us see our real potential is that we let our expectations get in the way. We expect tomorrow to be like today, forever. We look at our life the way it is today instead of how it could be tomorrow. Who we are and how and what we think get in the way of who we could become and how and why we should change our thinking, and ourselves, in a way that will draw success, happiness and prosperity to us as surely sunshine creates good feelings.
This book has been written in a way that lets you start anywhere you consider necessary, but it will be more effective and easily understood if you follow the sequence of the book starting here with the Introduction which sets the scene for The Power of Your Mind, and then continuing through Part 1, to Parts 2 and 3, Time is Life and Achieving Your Goals. You should adopt the practice of reviewing the book constantly, because it is only through repetition that we learn.
Yes You Can is about life itself and how, through the use of the powers of your mind, you can make your life what you want it to be. The part of Yes You Can that deals with the powers of your mind is about the self-fulfilling prophecy and why and how faith and belief are essential to making the prophecy work in your life. The part of Yes You Can devoted to time and goals is about doing the purposeful action necessary to complete the prophecy. All are necessary parts of making your possible dream come true. Keep your dream vividly in your mind all the time you are reading this book and constantly ask yourself, How can I put this part of Yes You Can to work in my life to ensure the possible dream becomes a reality for me?
Yes You Can is divided into parts so you can go easily to any part and review that complete topic, or you can select specific subject matter and find it under a separate chapter. You can choose what is important to you at any particular time. Yes You Can is not about what you must do; it is about giving you worthwhile choices. It is filled with practical, easy-to-use strategies, techniques and tactics for you to implement and it explores the attitudes that help and hinder us on our journey through life. If you choose to go down this path of self-discovery and you implement a way of thinking that follows the laws of life expounded in this book, you will make your life simpler and more enjoyable, for yourself and others, and you will achieve your true potential as a human being. The suggestions given to you in Yes You Can represent a valuable and rewarding growth experience. As Plato said, Self conquest is the greatest of all victories.
Here are three steps to guide you in your use of this book:
- Be an active reader. Read with a pen or pencil and make notes in the margin. Use a highlighter in your favourite colour to bring to your attention quickly and easily those parts you might like to refer to again. At the end of each chapter make a list of those things you want to put into practice.
- Make a practice of attempting at least one new concept, strategy or technique each week. If you do this, in one year you will put into effect fifty new ideas to build a better and different you. Pay particular attention to using priorities when putting your activities to work. Pay attention to the 80/20 rule. You will get 80 per cent of your benefit from 20 per cent of what you do, so focus all your efforts on the 20 per cent that counts.
