WHAT CAN WE SAY OF YOU
THE STORY OF OUR JOURNEY WITH YOGI BHAJAN
In 1969 Gurutej met Yogi Bhajan, the man credited with introducing Kundalini Yoga to the United States. Gurutejs life and this book have been greatly influenced by her experiences with him.
You were a warrior with a mission to save the children of the 60s and to bring a new consciousness to the west. To write about you, and what made us seek you out, would take a lifetime.
I want to write of a time like Avalon. A mere thirty years later people cannot comprehend how we did these things. We dropped everything and moved to foreign countries, moving anywhere you sent us to open up Ashrams. Ashrams were the spiritual communities we wanted but had never lived in, much less organized or run. We were sent to foreign lands to start these communities, sheltering and caring for anyone who came to us. We were liberal arts majors in our early twenties, and we did all it took to build new communities.
We started businesses to support and sustain this group, bought property to house us, and figured out how to cook and clean. We learned to sustain a group of nomads, both spiritually and physically, so we could uplift ourselves and the world. And we didn't even think this was lofty.
From the platform of a yoga class you inspired us to learn to chant Gurbani, to read Gurumukhi, and to dive into a Sikh lifestyle. All this was based on the love we found with you, practicing yoga and chanting these wonderful mantras that you bestowed like confetti. In classes, you yelled and pushed and shoved us to excel, to go beyond our limits way beyond our limits. We had never heard of a comfort zone, the term had not yet been invented. There was nothing comfortable about this journey, except when we chanted and meditated. Then we got it. We got you. With you we were everything.
I read a quote of yours today: When God wants to get your attention He/She makes things difficult. When God wants you to go to sleep He/She makes things easy. God really got our attention.
You could pressure us, make demands of us, even push us off cliffs, but we could never budge you. I remember the time I awaited your visit to Toronto with childlike glee. I had found an art exhibition I loved, and I couldnt wait to share it with you. I wanted to surprise you not just with a gift, but with something yummy to do. It was winter in Toronto, bitterly cold and dreary, which for me was like being banished to the underworld. Just your coming brought light. When I suggested our magical adventure, your response stunned me: I really hate the cold and just dont even want to go out in it if I can help it.
I wanted to scream, What do you mean? My mind swirled. How could you come here if that was the case? What about Alaska or England? How could you have sent me into this hell, where it freezes for half the year, knowing I feel exactly the same way youdo about the cold? It was all easy for you. You had a mission. People were either in theprogram or not. At that time, you only had time for those who were in.
Later you met many people from other walks of life who you dealt with, inspired and uplifted who could not (or would not) be part of this more confining mandate. We, however, were not part of that crowd. We were part of the foundation and the guts of this 3HO Foundation, this Sikh Dharma of the Western Hemisphere, which has not stayed in the West. You used us as the fodder for the foundation. We are blown apart. We are the rich soil for the generations who follow to grow on.
This was my introduction to what a relationship with a spiritual teacher looked like. All relationships have unique guidelines. Each one is precious and gives us different gifts. Some gifts we like much better than others, but each one molds you into the essence of yourself. If you dont like the relationships you are attracting, this book is a great guide to shifting the essence of you.
INTRODUCTION
You are welcome to have a relationship with me. I love God, you love God; we will have a relationship. You want to walk the path with me. Walk. The path is very simple. I compassionately live; you should live compassionately.
Yogi Bhajan
Of all the jobs we hold in life, the most important are the intimate relations we share with those we love. Throughout our days and years, we strive for connection, compassion, understanding, and ultimately a bond between hearts and minds.
