Im a mindset guy, theres no mistaking it and you already know this. But Ive discovered in my life there are things I must do to keep the balance and energy levels I need for the work I do. As a passionate Italian, I have inbuilt expression. It was installed at birth. Some would say I got more than my share when expression was apportioned but its just the way I connect with people which triggers it. Im passionate about passion, its the Italian way!
But back to point... We are responsible for our health as much as we are our wealth. Our health and wealth are the result of our decisions and choices.
Now you may have heard me say this before but if we are what we eat then I should be a supreme pizza. The truth is, what we put into our bodies and how we treat ourselves determines our energy levels, our clarity of thought, our speed of reaction... and the list goes on.
The physiology of our body is just as important. We need to take care of our bodies just as we do when considering the food we eat, the things we say and what we read. Intellectually, our knowledge is paramount to our personal development. But by making sure our balance is in check in all areas of our life, we give ourselves the best opportunity to interact at our full potential.
Who are we really?
What is our perception of our health?
Do we give it as much attention as our perception of wealth?
How does our wellbeing support all other areas in our life?
This chapter from Dr Michael Troy will resonate with you if you have an ounce of concern for your own wellbeing. The depth of his knowledge is vast however his ability to put it into plain English and illustrate how our bodies react and respond is simply astounding.
What he discusses in this chapter is very aligned to my thinking on mindset. In fact this chapter could be a good picture of how our mindset works and reacts to our surroundings. And actually this is not the first time I have considered this parallel.
There is little point in me expanding much more here as Dr Troy has so succinctly described things in his chapter that I dont want to detract from his incredible understanding.
Block out all distractions and quieten yourself down so you can fully absorb what he is saying here. You will be challenged as you read this and by the end of this chapter you could be thinking very differently.
Dr. Troy, you are now an inspiring leader on health related subjects and practices. Were you raised in a healthy environment, or did you learn this later in life?
I was fortunate. My parents were always very health conscious but had a wholesome and balanced approach. Mum would prepare tasty nutritious meals made from fresh produce, and on occasion treat us to some sugary sweets. Dad was into exercise and, way before it became popular, utilised vitamin and mineral supplements.
From the age of about ten or eleven, I would get up at some hideously early hour and go swimming training with Dad. Today, some forty years later, I still get up absurdly early; to go to the gym (once per week), run (twice per week) and do yoga (twice per week).
My fascination with nutrition has lead me to its lifelong study; not just academically but also with (over forty years so far) of personal experimentation. Ive seen many health fads come and go, and I now believe the solid knowledge I have acquired is the truth regarding human beings, health and nutrition.
What motivated you to become a chiropractor?
It amazes me how certain events are pivotal in our lives. Ironically, the one that led me to chiropractic was at Dads expense: One night at karate, Dad copped a kick to the chest that landed him on his butt and subsequently hurt his lower back. The instructor (and the instigator of the incident), referred Dad to the local chiropractor (and probably received a referral fee on the side), but then something happened that changed everything...
When Dad got home from his visit to the chiropractor, he was beaming with inspiration! He proceeded to explain to us how the brain controls every function in our bodies; as well as how it adapts us to function optimally in our ever-changing external environment: The brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out along the various spinal nerves to all the different parts of the body. In turn, all the parts (organs, muscles and joints) send messages back to the brain.
He said this two way flow of information is critical for optimal health. When your spine is out of alignment the messages do not flow appropriately and eventually cause a state of dis-ease in the body (a lack of ease which precedes disease). Finally, Dad relayed that chiropractic adjustments maintain optimal spinal alignment and function and therefore, allow the brain and the body to communicate through the nervous system optimally and subsequently enable optimal expression of health.
