Early one morning in 2001, well before people began to congregate on the beach in Dunedin, Florida, I sat sipping coffee and enjoying the serenity of the ocean. On a weekend getaway with my good friend Connie, I was far from ESPN, where Id been a corporate executive for the past 12 years. My accomplishments at the network had elevated me to a level of considerable success: high visibility, worldwide travel, a powerful leadership position, and an executive salary with perks. I should have been at the happiest point in my life. Yet I had to admit that I wasnt.
In this rare moment of quiet in the peaceful morning lightno BlackBerry vibrating with messages, no phones ringing off the hookI began to scrutinize my so-called success. While my work at ESPN was challenging, creative, and often rewarding, I sometimes felt an emptiness I couldnt quite explain. Id hear news stories of rescue workers who were saving lives when all hope was lost. No one would question whether such a person was making a difference in someone elses life. I would ask myself, Is it my lifes purpose to provide entertaining and relaxing sports programming for the skillful brain surgeon at the end of his day? In my mind that was, at best, a stretch. Yet society said that I was successful, so I forced myself to persevere. It seemed as if I had no choice: the competitive nature of business had a way of making me feel that no matter what monumental tasks I completed in a day, a week, a month, it was never quite good enough.
