In this scrapbook of your spiritual family tree, you have the faithful patriarchs and matriarchs who make you proud...and the scoundrels who youd rather not talk about. But all of these ancestors, Couples of the Bible, will give you a snapshot of your biblical heritage. Some bring encouragement, others offer a stern warning.

Through this 52-week devotional experience, you will be reacquainted with the obstacles and outcomes of familiar couples like Abraham & Sarah...and meet some lesser-known couples like Othniel & Aksah. Each week focuses on one couple of the Bible, from Adam & Eve to Christ & His Bride. You will read their story, learn about their cultural setting and explore how their story can teach you important truths about your own marriage. Each week you will be guided with questions applying biblical truth to your relationship with your spouse. And youll finish the week with a time of reflection, thanksgiving and prayer.

Couples of the Bible will teach you how God guided couples in the past and will encourage you to trust in his faithfulness for your marriage.

With thanksgiving and gratitude,

we dedicate this book to

Monroe and Susie Dourte,

married in 1911,

and to their eight children

Grace Wolgemuth and her husband, Samuel;

Ruth Musser and her husband, Elias;

Mary Martin and her husband, Roy;

Allon Dourte and his wife, Jeanette;

Eber Dourte and his wife, Ruth;

Jesse Dourte and his wife, Wilma;

Esther Snyder and her husband, Paul;

Victor Dourte and his wife, Lois.

All of these were married till death do us part.

Because of their love for Gods Word,

they inspire us to become a couple of the Bible.

We are grateful for their lives, their faith,

and their example of endurance.

O ver the years, when we have looked for wisdom for our own marriage or for advice to give couples who came to us for counsel, we turned to the truth of Scripture. In our four decades of marriage, Scripture has been our compass. Based on Gods clear message for marriages and families, our ministry, FamilyLife, was founded in 1976 and has sought to bring those blueprints to home builders around the world.

When we first heard about the idea of a book highlighting couples in the Bible, we were intrigued. Yes, biblical history is bursting with the stories of husbands and wives. Wouldnt it be convenient to be able to meet all these couples in one place?

As we thought about it, from beginning to end, the Bible is full of stories about relationships. God existed in perfection as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit even before He created Eden and carefully crafted humansa man and a womanto live in unbroken fellowship with each other and their Creator. Step by step, from Genesis to Revelation, the character of GodHis grace, mercy, and lovecan be traced through His encounters with men and women couples of the Bible. Learning about these couples provides an overview of the entire Bible and Gods great love and grace for mankind.

Even if you have a limited understanding of the Bible, you may already know that it displays the lives of men and women as they really are, hiding none of their humanityfears, mistakes, or rebellious ways. The honesty of Scripture allows us to see ourselves as people in process, learning what husbands and wives can do to grow into healthy and whole relationships with God and with each other.

Couples of the Bible will provide a view of marriage unlike any other book, because it takes dozens of Bible characters and unpacks the accounts of their lives and marriages. For fifty-two weeks, you will be able to spend a whole week with a biblical couple, learning their story and capturing life lessons from each onelessons that, if applied, have the capacity to inspire and strengthen your marriage.

In this book, you may meet some couples you didnt know before. And you may be surprised by what you discover in the marriages of couples you thought you knew.

Someone has said, Tomorrow you will be the same person you are today, except for the people you meet and the books you read. We could amend this by suggesting that tomorrow your marriage will be better than it is today because you have met these biblical couples and spent time in the Bible, observing Gods gracious character.

If you want to be closer to each other and to God, we recommend looking at biblical examples of those who followed God faithfully, learning from their lives.

And finally, let us say a word about the authors. When you meet Robert and Bobbie Wolgemuth, it isnt just their last name that is distinctive. This is a couple that lives with distinction. Weve watched them on their journey to mountaintops, and weve prayed for them as theyve weathered storms together. They are serious followers of Christ who seek to surrender to Him and His lordship every day. They live where you live, and their authenticity is both refreshing and exhilarating. I may have met a more talented couple, but honestly, Im not sure who that couple would be if its not Robert and Bobbie. Singing, speaking, writing, leading, loving, laughing they really are remarkable. And we like them.

Now we commend this helpful and insightful book to you. Whether it takes a year or even longer to meander your way through, you are going to really enjoy the journey.

W hen you married, you started on a journey with your spouse. Without knowing what was ahead, you began walking an unfamiliar trail that was certain to surprise you with twists and turns, from pleasant valleys to steep rugged placesand plenty of unexpected terrain in between. Wouldnt you like to meet other couples who have walked ahead of you on some of the same paths you and your spouse may travel?

Couples of the Bible is a book about how God revealed Himself through the lives of men and women. It is a visit with some couples who trusted God in the midst of great trials and suffering, and with others who lived in deep darkness, doubt, and disobedience.

Youll encounter couples you already know and meet others for perhaps the first time. And youll see how their lives reveal the wonder and power of Gods loving nature and faithfulness. Youll experience the overarching plot of Scripturecreation, fall, redemption all pointing to the main character, Jesus.

Reading the accounts of these couples will inspire you to draw closer to God and to each other. Shared victories, defeats, mistakes, and restored relationships form a common link across the centuries and will turn your attention to the God who was active in the past and is still active today in your marriage.

As you read the stories of biblical couples, you are invited to listen to the voice of God, enjoy His companionship, trust His intervention in your marriage, and believe He is a God who will walk with you.

The Biblea collection of sixty-six separate booksopens with creation a man and a woman in a perfect relationship, in a perfect place. And it ends with the marriage of believersthe churchto their perfect Groom, Jesus Christ. Between these bookends are many couples who offer us a road map to trace Gods ways, see His character, trust His purposes, and receive His redemptive plan.

After Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden, they were forced to leave Paradise. Yet, despite the rebellion of the first couple, God was merciful. Then and now He chooses and leads ordinary men and women to display His goodness.

Sometimes were like Eve; we are prone to pluck at forbidden fruit. Other times were like Jacob; we panic and try to manipulate situations to fit our needs. Or maybe were like Zechariah and Elizabeth; we wonder if God will ever give us our longed-for blessing.

The biblical couples you will encounter will speak for themselves. Some will warn you and challenge you to make necessary changes. Others will encourage you to persevere and wait for Gods perfect timing. All of them will show you new things about God.

The Bible is a living book. It is the inspired love story of the great King in heaven who woos His people and commits Himself to perfectly love them forever.
