Practical techniques that work at the level of the mind-body interface, such as meditation, yoga, and qi gong, are growing in popularity as tools for health and well-being. However, for many people, these practices are still shrouded in a mystique generated by media coverage, which often emphasizes their peculiarities and any degree of difficulty in learning them. Perhaps this is most applicable to hypnosis, which has an unprecedented reputation as being a strange and complicated phenomenon. In this book, Dr. Burke has delivered a simple but thorough description of the mind-body technique of self-hypnosis, which cuts through the stereotype associated with hypnosis and provides a clear understanding of the process and simple instructions for practicing it. His clinical experience with self-hypnosis is evident throughout the text and this is particularly helpful in conveying the principles and basic techniques in a very personable manner. It is a very useful handbook.

preface
Self-hypnosis is a powerful tool for promoting healing, growth, and transformation. It works by activating a creative state of mind and body where new learning can occur effectively, almost effortlessly. Once awakened this creative space can help provide you with the knowledge and energy you need to succeed in life, helping to build new beliefs and to focus action. Through regular practice, you will find a richer life unfolding naturally, with deeper friendships, faster healing, increased income, improved concentration and learning, enhanced sports performance, whatever you seek.
The process is simple, it does not take much time, and the results can be truly incredible. Basically all that you need is a goal, a few minutes to focus quietly, and a simple process for realizing success. Individuals who are ready for change will find Self-Hypnosis to be an essential learning resource. This book provides a palette of techniques for working with personal goals and life dreams. By following the methods provided you can quickly begin making progress on your goals and feel more in control of your life and your destiny. Working with these tools can empower anyone to move toward his or her potential more confidently and more powerfully. The only limit is the size of your dreams.
Regarding the ideas in this book, although the theories about hypnosis and how it works are diverse and not uncontroversial, I have elected to present a specific model of mind, body, and transformation that makes sense to me and produces results for my clients and students. It has evolved over the years based on my work with acupuncture as a form of energy medicine, meditation systems, and many varieties of hypnotic techniques. The result is a vision of hypnosis as a tool to modify belief, working with the subtle architecture of psyche and soma, opening us to a more aligned and potent power within. In time all ideas evolve and change. It is hoped that the ideas and tools presented here will offer food for thought and, more important, tools for lasting and gratifying change. Good luck and enjoy the journey.
[ PART ONE ]
self-hypnosis and
TRANSFORMATION
lifes potential
Self-hypnosis is a simple, practical tool for transforming beliefs. Why is that important? The beliefs we hold about self, others, and the world influence every single experience we have. If we believe we are not smart enough or that we are unattractive, that the world is not safe, or that we are not loved by other people, then our life becomes very limited, very constricted. On the other hand, if we believe that we are worthy, that the world is good, and that we are loved by others, then our life expands. It is really quite simple.
Beyond Limits
Our positive beliefs inspire us. They allow us to embrace dreams, to harness healing energy, to have hope and confidence, and to take empowered action. Positive beliefs strengthen and encourage us; perhaps we can say they liberate us. Certainly both types of beliefs, positive and negative, are within us. The thing to remember is that we always have a choice about which beliefs will constitute the core of our reality. If we want to be happy, if we hope to live a powerful life, the appropriate choice becomes clear. To experience deep healing and high happiness it is imperative that we act to reduce our limiting beliefs and to replace them with powerful new positive beliefs. We all possess the potential for an incredible life journey. Such a life begins and ends with empowered beliefs. If we can learn to work more intentionally with our beliefs then we will possess a key to achieving the greatest life possible.
