Enneagram Book
Dear Reader,
I fell in love with the Enneagram when I learned that modern-day psychologists, psychiatrists, and theologiansrespected, intelligent psychologists, psychiatrists, and theologiansutilized it as a counseling tool. With a background in psychology and an ongoing quest for continuing education in the field, I put a great deal of credence on the fact that generations of original thinkers in the field found the Enneagram a legitimate theoretical system for understanding human behavior.
Unlike the horoscope or other similar typing methodologies, the Enneagram is based on what happens to you in this life, on this planet. I found the Enneagram fascinating, and I integrated extensive research with my prior knowledge of psychology to find a way to present the material in an ea sy-to-understand manneroffering a broad overview that you can easily assimilate and use right off the bat.

With gratitude and great affection, I dedicate this book to Marjorie Sue
Myers, one of my dearest friends, who was in the final stages of valiantly
battling ovarian cancer while I was writing this book. She brought love,
joy, and inspiration into many lives, and those lucky enough to have shared

A cknowledgments
Many kudos and thanks to the scholars and theorists who have written books about the Enneagram. Their interpretations and explanations of this system were invaluable in understanding and then forging a way to communicate its basic principles. This book uses Jungian terminology and concepts to explain the Enneagram. In deference to all the aforementioned Enneagram scholars, theorists, and authors, please understand that this book is not in any way attempting to create a new theory or seeking in any way to diminish the unique and valuable contributions of others.
The purpose of this book is to offer Everything readers an easily understandable overview of the Enneagramwhere it originated, how it works, why its gaining favor as a personality typology tool, and how they can use it to further understand themselves and their loved ones and, hopefully, evolve. Each of the chapters has a Jungian overview, and this book does not purport to subvert, reconceptualize, or in any way refute or detract from previous Enneagram books. It is highly recommended that anyone interested in an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of this system read experts on the subject (see ). This book makes every effort to credit direct references to unique theorists, but, in deference to them, it primarily relies upon deductions formed after extensive research, input from working Enneagram coaches, and the use of Jungian concepts to assimilate and reconfigure descriptions of each of the nine types and behaviors that characterize enneatypes.
The author also thanks Acquisitions Editor Lisa Laing for the opportunity to work on this book, Development Editor Brett Palana-Shanahan for editing assistance, Paula Munier and John Waters for sharing their knowledge, and especially Clarence Thomson for his substantial input, careful review, and many clarifying insights. I also thank my friends: Emma Gordon, Kenny Harris, Darlene Torrence, Eddie Parker, Ann Masters, Evelyn Myers, Kika Rosenthal, Ken Silverberg, Margaret and Jaime Juntwait, Jane and Mike Rudes, Lori and Brian Zaslow, Mara McGinnis, Nancy Jaslow Bader, Brian Ballerini, Arlene Corsello, Sheila Ryan, Stanley Keith, Gale Giorgi, Wanda Whalen, Jan Berry Kadrie, Terra Mizwa, and many others; my siblings Roy, Jim, Rozanne, and their families; and especially my beloved children Brooke and Brett Aved for tolerating long periods of silence and limited opportunities to visit throughout the long course of writing this book.
