With an introduction by Marie Curies granddaughter, nuclear physicist Dr. Hlne Langevin-Joliot, who reveals a host of interesting and hitherto unknown stories about her famous family (winners of five Nobel Prizes), this unique popular science book dispels many unfounded fears and provides a wealth of valuable information.
As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Marie Curies first Nobel Prize, awarded to her and her husband, Pierre, for their monumental discovery of radioactivity, it is an ideal time to reflect on the countless ways that their astounding work has so marvelously enriched our daily lives. Despite public fears of the potentially harmful effects of radiation from nuclear waste, we in fact rely on its many beneficial uses everyday for fresh food preservation, fighting terrorism, stopping crime, cancer detection and treatment, spacecraft power, and numerous other life-enhancing applications.
In this lucid overview of radiations many great benefits and ongoing potential, Dr. Alan E. Waltar, past president of the American Nuclear Society, explains how this important energy source has been harnessed to serve a plethora of humanitarian tasks. Through artful use of vivid anecdotes that give vibrancy to technical explanations, Waltar provides numerous examples of radiations many uses in agriculture, medicine, electricity generation, modern industry, transportation, public safety, environmental protection, space exploration, and even archeology and the arts. Estimating the total financial contribution of all these varied uses, Waltar comes to the startling revelation that radiation technology now contributes more than $420 billion to the U.S. economy and over 4.4 million jobs. In only one century, Marie Curies discoveries have provided an infrastructure larger than the entire U.S. airline industry.
In the future Dr. Waltar foresees continuous improvement in many areas of science, industry, and medicine through tapping the incredible potential of Marie Curies initial insights. At a time when our dependency on foreign oil makes us vulnerable and when we know that our fossil fuel resources will soon be used up, we need to understand radiation more than ever. This superb book will provide that necessary insight

Advance Praise for Radiation and Modern Life

"This book is a treasure trove of information about the uses of radiation and radioactive materials told in a most interesting and meaningful way. It is easy reading and communicates the basic principles of radioactivity and the significance of each application of radiation in a personalized way that is very understandable, even by readers without a background in science."

-Robert J. Lull, MD, Clinical Professor of Radiology and Laboratory Medicine and Director, Nuclear Medicine Resident Training Program, University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine; Chief of Nuclear Medicine, San Francisco General Hospital; Past President, American College of Nuclear Physicians

"This exceptional book dispels many false notions and adds a wealth of wonderful information about how our lives are and can be better through the wise use of radiation technologies. Properly applied in food processing, radiation can add up to 25 percent to the world's pure food supply, thereby saving millions upon million of people from starvation and disease."

-Don Hodel, Former Secretary of Energy and Secretary of the Interior

"Alan Waltar has rendered a great public service in compiling and explaining in easily understandable terms the diverse vital contributions of nuclear technology to our economy and to our way of life. His thorough research in digging out applications in numerous very different areas is truly remarkable, and he tells the story in a way that readily maintains the interest of the reader. Anyone, scientist or nonscientist, will learn a great deal from this book."

-Bernard L. Cohen, Professor Emeritus, Department of Physics, University of Pittsburgh, and author of The Nuclear Energy Option

"Dr. Waltar reveals in this book the startling fact that many areas of our everyday life have been beneficially affected by harnessed radiation, helping the readers to take the mystery and fear out of radiation, which is as much a part of our natural surroundings as air and water."

-Shunsuke Kondo, Chairman of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo

"Waltar presents the public with important technical insights on the multiuses of radiation in our daily lives in a relevant, accessible manner. His discussion `How Harmful Is Ionizing Radiation' is a wonderfully clear and convincing dialogue."

-Neil E. Todreas, KEPCO Professor of Nuclear Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Radiation and modern life fulfilling Marie Curies dream - image 7his book would never have been written without the original urging of Prof. Bernard Cohen of the University of Pittsburgh. He was the "fireplug" who recognized the need, based primarily on the pioneering work done by Roger Bezdek and colleagues about a decade ago that revealed the enormity of the previously unrecognized benefits of radiation technology to everyday life in America. Recognizing that this positive message needed to reach a wide audience, Bernie successfully convinced Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, a Nobel Laureate who had personally served ten US presidents in high-level positions, to author the book. After all, Glenn was the codiscoverer of several of the radioisotopes now in common commerce-one of which is responsible for benefiting one out of every three Americans who enters a US hospital or medical clinic today. Hence, his name alone would certainly give such a book credibility and wide readership. Glenn agreed to do this, along with the help of knowledgeable colleagues in the variety of fields served by radiation technology. Unfortunately, Dr. Seaborg died before the project got formally underway.

Enter Linda Regan, editor of some of Dr. Cohen's previous books and currently executive editor at Prometheus Books. Fully appreciating the importance of the project, she pushed hard to find a way to resuscitate and complete the mission. Since I was one of those who had agreed to help Dr. Seaborg, Linda pressed me for several months on how to continue this undertaking and, in particular, how to attract support from someone who had the stature of Dr. Seaborg to provide the needed vision. One day I casually mentioned the visit of Marie Curie's granddaughter, Dr. Helene Langevin-Joliot, to a special commemorative effort we held in honor of Marie Curie at Texas A&M University. Linda immediately recognized the possibilities, and she knew she had the makings of something very special. She convinced me to go to Paris and share these possibilities with Helene. After careful consideration, Helene agreed that the book was needed, and she graciously committed to both write an introduction and review the entire manuscript. That was the key to moving forward.

The only problem was that I had to agree to do most of the work! However, despite the long hours in trying to weave this project around a full-time job and numerous other commitments, I have found it to be an exceptional pleasure. Little did I realize how much our lives have been transformed for the better as a direct result of the pioneering discoveries of Marie Curie and those who followed her. Whereas I doubt that any living person has a full grasp of this impact, I have been the fortunate recipient of several very talented colleagues who agreed to review major portions of the manuscript in areas of their expertise to maximize both coverage and accuracy.

At the risk of missing key contributors, I would like to gratefully summarize the very constructive input and reviews by the following colleagues: opening chapter: Denis Beller; agriculture: James Dargie and Ray Durante; medicine: Bob Lull, Bob Schenter, and Darrell Fisher; electricity: Ann Bisconti and Angie Howard; industry: Peter Airey; transportation: Walt Laity and Roger Knight; space exploration: David Boyle and Fred Best; terrorism, crime, and public safety: Ned Wogman; arts and sciences: Dan Reece; environmental protection: Roy Gephart; modem economy: Roger Bezdek; and future glimpses: Lee Peddi- cord.

In addition to these special experts, I was pleased that Roger Bezdek, Bob Gehrke, and Don Todd agreed to review the entire manuscript. All three provided very valuable input. However, Bob Gehrke delivered true yeoman's duty. He was the only person I knew who had the breadth of experience to provide an in-depth review, and he did this with an incredible degree of professionalism.

Kathy Kachele deserves enormous credit for her masterful skill in creating the graphics. She has both the eye and the imagination of a true professional in transforming concepts into graphics that convey clear meaning. I am most grateful for her support.
