Foreword
I recently enjoyed a delightful dinner in NYC with my dear friend of over a decade, Jorge Cruise. We caught up about one another's lives and families, of course, but then devoted much of our time together to a discussion of Jorge's new bookthis bookTiny and Full. I have since had the opportunity to read the book, and here are a few impressions.
Jorge has always had, and continues to have, a unique ability to take complicated information and make it simple and accessible. In particular, I consider him genuinely gifted when it comes to seeing an easy way into an important healthy behavior change that most people find intimidating. That is certainly the case with tiny and full, which addresses the many good reasons for eating more plant-based diets that many of us talk about all the time. But then, in that inimitable Jorge Cruise style, the book serves up a brilliantly simple insight that never dawned on the rest of us: go vegan in the morning! Suddenly, what might have seemed an imposing burden of change is bite-size, and manageable. Suddenly, you can get there from hereand then, perhaps, keep going.
As a physician focused on disease prevention and health promotion, Jorge knows that tiny, the use of which he explains, is his choice but not mine. While he is quite right about waist circumference as a potent indicator of metabolic health, and the waist to hip ratio in women an indicator of reproductive health that has had implications for attractiveness and sex appeal throughout history and across all cultures, you certainly don't need to be tiny to be healthy, and my focus is health and vitality. If we take the liberty of interpreting tiny to mean a healthy waist circumference, then we are aligned. It's not about size; it's about vitality.
