About the Author
With degrees in journalism and exercise physiology, and a long reputation as a fitness author and instructor, Therese Iknoian used every tool of her trade to research and write Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies. She spent a decade as a newspaper reporter before launching a freelance career specializing in sports and fitness writing and instruction and earning her masters degree in exercise physiology. She has been a nationally ranked race walker, and is an internationally published freelance health & fitness writer whose work has appeared in Mens Health, Fitness, Backpacker, Shape, Womens Day, Walking, and Parenting, among others. Aside from magazine and book writing, she is also a partner in GearTrends LLC www.GearTrends.com the premier information Web site for products and trends in the fitness, outdoor, paddle, snow, and bike markets. Her other Web site, Total Fitness Network www.TotalFitnessNetwork.com is filled with her stories about all areas of fitness and training and was recognized as a 1999 Golden Web award winner.
Long known as The Walking Woman because of her two walking books and personal competitive race walk history, Therese Iknoian breaks out of that stereotype with Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies. Though proud of the walking label and her advocacy for that activity, she continually takes on other fitness or sports challenges and has never met one she didnt want to experience... if she hasnt already. From rock climbing to running to rafting, Therese is the first one to say Lets go! sometimes much to the chagrin of her husband, parents, and friends. As someone who has also tried assorted mind-body techniques over the last two decades, she was eager to research and dabble in them all even more. Her family likes it better when she stands still and moves slowly.
Therese has authored two books on walking, two instruction/music audiotapes for walkers, and has developed fitness and walking programs for several international companies. She is an American College of Sports Medicine-certified Health/Fitness Instructor and holds enhanced credentials in nutrition, is a gold-certified ACE instructor, and a USA Track & Field Level II-certified coach who focuses on working with kids. As a race walker, she was ranked 24th overall woman in the country in 1995, and in 1994 broke the world record for her age group for the Indoor 3K. She still holds the age-group record for the Outdoor 3K. She ran her first marathon in 2000 in 3 hours 45 minutes, qualifying for her age group for Boston 2001. In 1999, she began competing in Adventure Races, and she placed 3rd in the corporate division in the New York Hi-Tec Adventure Race.
