My anger and frustration over my situation were expressed in a kind of vengeful glamour. In order to get through dinner, I would take mescaline or LSD, and descend from my bedroom into the kitchen in high drag: Liz Taylor-as-Cleopatra-inspired eye makeup, Eva Gabor wigs, stiletto heels, and ridiculously long cigarette holders. One afternoon in 1973, while getting ready to go to an Alice Cooper concert, I began reading Thomas Hardy's
