FOREWORD
After collaborating with Ridwan Shabsigh, MD, in patient care, research, and teaching at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University, I am honored to introduce this landmark book.
Although our medical specialties differpatients from all over the world visit me for heart ailments and visit Dr. Shabsigh for problems with sexual functionhe and I share a common medical philosophy and treatment approach.
We both believe in prevention, early detection, timely intervention, and wise adoption of complementary medicine. We use whatever has been proven to work. Dr. Shabsigh and I apply our specialized surgical skills only when other options are not successful or appropriate. We understand that superior medical care is delivered by evaluating a patient globally and integrating as many treatment weapons as possible to reverse a medical complaint. Medications work. Surgery indeed saves lives. But diet, exercise, supplements, counseling, and meditation all have value in improving surgical outcomes, and, more important, in helping to avoid surgery in the first place.
Prevention and early detection are the vanguards of modern medicine. If doctors and patients are proactive about staying healthy and take aggressive action at the first sign of illness, many serious repercussions, surgeries, and their inherent complications could be prevented. Premature deaths could be drastically reduced. Quality of life could be improved and extended. Health care isnt always about a magic bullet or a sharp scalpel.
Sometimes the cutting-edge approaches are not high-tech. Improving your lifestyle and eliminating excess weight and harmful habits will pay dividends in the bedroom and in your entire life. A large part of Dr. Shabsighs program is dedicated to empowering men so that they can maintain good health and prevent its decline.
The next best option is to diagnose disease early on and use the least invasive treatments to reverse it. Whether we are talking about your cardiovascular system or your sexual function, there are early warning signs of serious illness. Pay heed to any signal, whether its abnormal blood pressure, elevated lipids or other markers, or a problem with obtaining or maintaining an erection. They are all clues about the onset of cardiovascular disease, the rusting of your arteries.
Dr. Shabsigh is one of the pioneers who have identified erectile dysfunction (ED) as a valid predictor of cardiovascular disease and he has also shown its connection to diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and depression. His health gauges will help you to monitor your health and focus on what you need to tune up, preferably using the numerous nonprescription complementary approaches he describes in these pages. Intervening at the earliest stages of ED using his program could fully restore your sexual function right now. It could also help you to avoid heart attacks, strokes, and visits to the operating room for vascular bypasses or transplants associated with cardiovascular disease.
Sexual dysfunctions that are in a more advanced stage require the most powerful and up-to-date medical treatment options, and Dr. Shabsigh is equal to the task. His mastery of the diagnostic process and treatment selection, consummate skill in the operating room, and recognition of when other specialists should be consulted are second to none in his field. The minority of patients who need such care are fortunate to have someone like Dr. Shabsigh present the information about it here.
I often refer to Dr. Shabsigh as a sexual encyclopedia. He covers it allfrom prevention to surgerywithin these pages. But he goes far beyond sexual health in this book. Perhaps the best thing about his programfor doctors as well as the general publicis that it is a program for overall health. For you simply cannot maintain or improve sexual function, which depends on the cardiovascular and nervous systems as well as on brain function and hormone levels, without maintaining or improving general health. Any issue or concern related to sexual function should be the impetus to see a doctor to get to the root of the problem. Any doctor who examines a patient presenting with ED should explore other possible health issues. Dr. Shabsigh makes this point emphatically and advances the cause for regular and comprehensive health checkups for men, still woefully lacking today.
