CONTENTS

Dear Reader,

When I talk about the work I do, I say, I help moms who lose their temper. I used to yell at my kids every day, but I got help, and now I help others. Depending on whos listening, I get two reactions.

The first reaction is a sideways look. They look at me with surprise and suspicion. Theyre thinking, Cmon. Do you really NOT yell at your kids? In other words, Are you for-real? They dont believe me. For them, thats the way life is. Kids get yelled at. Its normal. Its necessary. Some of them even say to me, Wow, doesnt everyone yell at their kids? You must have a big business.

The second reaction is a different kind of wow, Wow, you must have a pretty small business. I only know one person like that.

I feel like Im standing between two big bubbles. Theres the bubble where people yell at their kids (and do other things, like throw banana bread), and then theres the bubble where they dont. Im here to tell you the good newsthat I broke out of the bubble where people yell at their kids, and you can too.

I have just one question: Are you ready?

Because Im going to tell you all the juicy stories. Ill tell you the details about the day I threw banana bread, and Ill also talk about the day I screamed at my daughter for dumping a container of bubbles on the ground. Ill even tell you about the most recent day where I didnt yell, but I cussed at the kids (Im still working on all this stuff!).

And, sister, Im holding out my hand to you (yes you, dear reader). Its an invitation to go on this journey with me. Ill walk with you step by step while I show you how I broke out of the bubble, and how Im still working on staying out.

Theres a part of me that cant explain how or why I woke up one day and decided that I had to take action and stop the yelling in my house. There was just something about it that didnt seem normal, that didnt seem right. And I wondered, Is all this yelling necessary? This is my story.

I wrote this book in two parts. In Part I, Ill tell you stories about how I used to yell and how I learned to stop yelling. In Part II, Ill tell you stories about how I discipline the kids now and teach you how to do it. Part II has the scripts, like what to say when your kid lies to you, or what to do when they hit another kid. As Ive been teaching, these are the scripts moms ask me for. Lets begin.

PART I

How I Broke the Yelling Habit

Chapter 1

The Day I Threw Banana Bread

The day I threw banana bread was one of my rock-bottom moments It was July - photo 2

The day I threw banana bread was one of my rock-bottom moments. It was July 3rd. As a caregiver for my dad, I filled many responsibilities, including responsibility for his happiness. Yes, as crazy as it seems, as an adult, I felt entirely responsible for my dads happiness.
