There are many courageous researchers and scientists who are trying to sound the wired/wireless wakeup call but whose voices are rarely heard. I have sincerely tried to give many of their findings a platform in this book by presenting their research in an area charged with controversy and politics.
First and foremost, I must express my deepest thanks to the incredible dedication and research abilities of Denise Foley, who was invaluable in the development of this book. Denise embraced the project with joy, humor, and a scientists desire to ferret out the truth. Denise: You are a gem. My brilliant and creative editor Nancy Hancock, who was also the guiding light in my Fat Flush series, once again showed her true grit with her tireless support and belief in the importance of the Zapped message. She engaged the entire HarperOne team, who have all been such enthusiastic supporters of this bookeven as they work and live in the very high tech environment this book exposes. And, of course, many thanks to Coleen OShea, the editor of my first book and now a first-rate literary agent whose advice is always spot on and in the very best interests of all involved.
My gratitude goes out to my beloved mentor, the late (but still great) Dr. Hazel Parcells, who first opened my eyes to the electromagnetic energy of foods and the importance of cleansing the body of toxins, including radiation and all of its by-products. In a similar vein, I salute the late Robert O. Becker, M.D., and Richard Gerber, M.D., two pioneering researchers in the field of energetic medicine, whose books about energy medicine enthralled me. I am grateful for the work of biophysicist James Oschman, Ph.D.; Nobel Prize winner Gunther Blobel, M.D., Ph.D., who established that the cells of our bodies send out frequencies (energetic signals) when they need a specific nutrient. I stand in the greatest admiration of Samuel Milham, M.D., M.P.H., of the Washington State Department of Health, who linked the rise in degenerative disease, cardiovascular disease, and suicide to U.S. electrification; the late W. Ross Adey, M.D., of the Pettis Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital in Loma Linda, California, whose research discovered how electropollution disrupts cellular communication; George Carlo, Ph.D., J.D., who found nonthermal effects, including brain tumors and genetic damage, from cell phone radiation; Olle Johansson, Ph.D., associate professor of neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute, whose work showed how vulnerable children are to EMFs (and agreedfrom Swedento be interviewed for this book); William Rea, M.D., the former surgeon who founded the Environmental Health Center in Dallas, Texas, to treat people with electrosensitivity; Martin Blank, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology and cellular biophysics at Columbia University, one of the worlds leading researchers on nonionizing radiation; Nancy Wertheimer and Ed Leeper, whose groundbreaking research first linked childhood leukemia with power lines, and David Savitz, at the University of Colorado Medical School, who confirmed their findings.
I have been greatly inspired and enlightened by award-winning New York Times writer B. Blake Levitt, whose landmark work shows how damaging cell towers and EMFs are to human health; journalist Christopher Ketcham, whose GQ reporting showed how invested the telecommunications industry is in wireless (despite its health risks); and all the independent researchers and investigative reporters whose work continues to alert the public to the dangers of EMFs. I especially enjoyed the work of Kerry Crofton, Ph.D., whose latest edition of her landmark book Radiation Rescue will no doubt help safeguard millions.
My personal heartfelt gratitude is extended to Larry Gust, electrical engineer and certified building biologist, a renowned expert in identifying electropollution in the home, who discovered extreme EMF hazards in my own home. Thanks, Larry, for your meticulous attention to detail and for making my home truly zap-proof, which no doubt has helped to extend the quality of life for my family; Charles Keen, at EMF Services, for his insights in voltage mitigation; Clint Ober, a former cable TV pioneer, who developed personal grounding techniques to reduce the effects of EMF exposure, and his coauthors, Steven T. Sinatra, M.D., FACC, CNS, an esteemed colleague and respected cardiologist, and Martin Zucker, one of my favorite health journalists and dear friend, for their never-before-told story of natural healing energy in Earthing.
Kudos to Louis Slesin, Ph.D., whose Microwave News provides the latest updates and overviews in the world of microwaves and beyond. Thanks to Dave Stetzer, an industrial electrician, who with Martin Graham, Ph.D., professor emeritus in the college of engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, developed the Graham-Stetzer (G/S) filters, or Stetzerizers, that have helped thousands neutralize their dirty electricity and regain health; Magda Havas, Ph.D., advocate and associate professor of environmental and resources studies at Trent University, whose research found major improvements in blood sugar and stress levels with G/S filters. Dr. Havas was extremely gracious when interviewed for this book. More power to the work of Camilla Rees, activist extraordinaire, and Dr. Havass coauthor of Public Health SOS: The Shadow Side of the Wireless Revolution.
I have the greatest admiration for the new breed of impassioned electrosensitive canaries that willingly shared their personal stories so that others could benefit. My thanks to Catherine Kleiber; Dr. Lisa Nagy, another victim of multiple chemical and electromagnetic sensitivities; and Gilligan Joy. There are myriad EMF experts and activists like Cindy Sage and David Carpenter, M.D. (coeditors of the landmark BioInitiative Report); Ann Baldwin, Ph.D., and Melinda Connor, Ph.D., at the Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health at the University of Arizona; and Martha Howard, M.D., medical director of Wellness Associates of Chicago, who are doing exemplary work in the field. A very fond personal thanks to the myriad e-mails and support from the Energy Medicine Foundations Carol Keppler, who has faithfully kept me abreast of the latest frequency updates with her special brand of TLC.
On the home front, the solid editorial/research/recipe assistance provided by Suzin Stockton; Gregg Stebben; Roon Frost; Bernie Rosen, Ph.D.; Linda Shapiro; Stuart Gittleman; Carol Templeton; and Tami Oliver (my personal assistant, who listened as I read and reread scientific jargon) were grounding and encouraging as I battled my own electrosensitivity while learning how to overcome it by writing this book!
And of course to James William Templeton, my partner, my love, my everything.
