Ian lives in London and is married to Iyabo, who puts his resilience to the test most weeks when she plays him at tennis. They have one son, Alex.
In putting this book together, I am indebted to a number of people for their guidance and support along the way. Among psychologists Id like to single out Rob Archer and Merlin Van de Braam. Among writers, Id like to thank Paul Morland and Julian Costley. A number of people at Pearson have given me tireless support and Id like to single out Eloise Cook, Antje King, Priya Dhanagopal, Chimaechi Allan, Mary Lince and Suzanne Pattinson for their superb work along with the rest of the team. Finally, my thanks to my wife Iyabo for her support and counsel.
Twenty years from now youll be more disappointed by the things you didnt do than the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour.

Whats the secret of achieving our goals? How can we become resilient enough to get there?
Are there any desires or ambitions in your work or life that fit into the Ive always wanted to category? Or are there specific milestones that youd like to hit in your career? If so, what has stopped you achieving them before now?
This may be to do with negative beliefs:
- I could never do that.
- Im not good enough.
- I dont have the motivation Im too lazy.
- I dont have the time, what with work and family.
- Im too old.
- If it were going to happen, it would have happened by now.
- Im not confident enough.
Or, alternatively, it may be more to do with negative behaviours:
- I give up I quit.
- I dont persist.
- I procrastinate.
- I let myself get distracted.
If any of these negative beliefs and behaviours strike a chord, then you are not alone. If youd like to change them, then this is where Head Start comes in.
It turns out that the equipment to succeed is something you already have your mind. Not only that, it also turns out that whatever aspect of mindset is obstructing you in your achievement of your goals, behavioural scientists have made enormous headway in recent years in their understanding of why it is so often a barrier and, more importantly, have come up with tools to help us change it and build our abilities.
This book will:
- Help you reframe your negative beliefs.
- Provide you with science-based tools to change your behaviour.
- Give you a further toolkit of best practice habits to help you on your way.

Some of us are beaten by the setbacks and challenges that life inevitably scatters across our path. If we lack resilience and the ability to bounce back, we are likely to simply to give up. For others, the fear of failure or lack of confidence can cause us to retreat into our comfort zone and avoid risk. This means we dont even try in the first place. Or it may be that our day job leaves us with too little time or energy to pursue our dreams.
In short, we just never get started and reconcile ourselves to disappointment. This can mean that we miss out on pursuing activities that might be enjoyable and fulfilling. In work, this can lead to demotivation and disengagement.
Of course, external factors certainly play a part. A lucky break can send you on your way while a reversal can knock you on your backside. There is only so much you can do to influence these factors. What you can influence, however, is your mental reaction to them.
Most of what lies within our control is to do with our mindset. And our mindset in turn drives our beliefs and our behaviours. This book will help you build a resilient mindset so that you can confront the fear of failure, venture outside your comfort zone and learn to persist in the face of adversity.
No matter how positive our mindset, no matter how great our motivation, success is ultimately driven by what we do. This is particularly the case when things get tough, such as when we encounter setbacks or reach a plateau.
So what behaviours do we exhibit when we try to achieve our goals? Do we start with good intentions but then get distracted by other things such as TV or social media? Do we take to heart unhelpful criticism from others and simply give up?
Success in achieving our goals is determined by the interplay between our beliefs and our behaviours. This book will work on both and will provide you with a science-based structure for your detailed goal-setting. As we go through each chapter you will build a personalised development plan for building the right mindset for goal achievement.
When we see others succeeding, its easy to explain that away as a function of talent or simply luck. How do we know that mindset plays a part?
For an example, lets take something recent and familiar Britains performance in the 2016 Olympics at Rio.
In 1996, Britains team of athletes returned from the Olympic Games in Atlanta with one solitary gold medal in rowing. This was a low point in British international sporting achievement and was the subject of a good deal of national self-flagellation in the media. Fast-forward to 2016 and Team GB built on the success of London 2012 with an even greater haul of medals.
In case people attributed the success of London 2012 to the fact that Britain was hosting the games, Britains performance at Rio in 2016 made it the first host nation to actually increase its tally of medals.
The scale of this achievement is astonishing. In 20 years Britain went from one solitary gold and being 32 nd in the medals table to 27 golds and second in the table to the US. To what is this success attributable?
In the narrative that has taken hold, the answer to that question usually revolves around Sir John Major, the National Lottery and the hundreds of millions of pounds invested in elite sport. But, as is often the case with narrative, this explanation is too simple.
