WITHIN the scope of so small a book, it would be impossible to do other than skim the surface of a subject so full of historic interest, so varied, and so very controversial as that of Bookbinding. Although it is to be hoped that the technical aspect may be interesting and helpful to many fellow craftsmen, this cannot claim to be a complete technical work. The subject matter has been mainly designed to arouse the interest of the general reader, to be of utility to the librarian and bookseller, and of value to the bibliophile.
There are few crafts practised to-day that can claim such antiquity as the craft of bookbinding and yet, in its sounder principles, it is so little known.
It may appear futile in these days of mass production to deal with a hand craft at all; but behind the plan of this work, there has always been the intention of examining the foundation principles which have so thoroughly stood the test of time, in the hope that in the development of mechanical production, these principles may not be overlooked.

THE
BOOKBINDING CRAFT AND INDUSTRY
CHAPTER I
THE EVOLUTION OF THE BOOK
ENTHUSIASTIC antiquaries amongst bookbinders are insistent in claiming that their craft dates back to the time when the Assyrians and Babylonians used tablets of clay for keeping their records. These tablets, which had their characters impressed on the surface, were baked to make them hard, and then protected with an outer covering also of clay, in the form of an envelope. As it is generally admitted that the work of a bookbinder consists largely of covering and protecting records, their claim is somewhat justified, although the relationship is about as far distant as the date.
In the later development of Roman times, records were kept on wax tablets, which were made by the hollowing out of wooden panels and filling the hollow with wax. The characters were then marked on the surface with a point which was called a style. There were generally two tablets connected together with rings and consequently given the name of diptych, meaning twofold. It did not, however, necessarily follow that they were always in twos, as they were occasionally joined in series of three or more.
The joining together of these tablets may justly be claimed as bookbinding, of a nature which is to-day considered of utility in binding sketch-books, albums, and the like. Even the ultra-modern looseleaf system is not a very far cry from the ancient Roman diptych.
The Egyptians found a way of making flat leaves from the papyrus reed on which they scratched their wonderful hieroglyphics, obviously so full of meaning. The very word papyrus seems, in spite of its antiquity, to bring us closely in touch with that ancient and wonderful people when we consider what the word paper means to us to-day.
