My name is Paul Colligan and Ive been in podcasting pretty much since day one. I love this space and I love training others on how to succeed in it. I have hundreds of students with millions of downloads whove seen success ranging from a number one position in iTunes to simply making someone's Mom proud. I consider myself to be one of podcastings biggest fans.
This isnt my first run at this. I already have two popular books about podcasting - The Business Podcasting Bible (released in 2006) and Podcast Strategies (released two years ago to a number one ranking in seven different countries). I still love both of these books and all that they represent, but they basically assume you know what podcasting is and that you want to do more with it.
For almost ten years now, Ive kept telling myself that I shouldnt do a how-to podcast book. I always believed there were people doing this part of the process better than me, and I always thought that I should keep people focused on the revenue and monetization side of podcasting (my favorite parts), but this simple problem kept popping up:
People were just making this more complicated than it needed to be. As a result, ten years later, some people arent podcasting because they believe its too complicated. This has to stop.
I cant stand unnecessary complication. Its a waste of all our time.
Sometimes I wonder how much money has been made from making podcasting more complicated than it needs to be.
You only have so many hours in the day, and you dont need to spend them trying to understand someones 200-page overly-complicated explanation of a much simpler process - especially if youre not looking to make a complicated podcast. I wont even start with a twenty-part video series or a weekend-long boot camp. Its just not that complicated.
Is this book the whole story on podcasting? No. As the title states, this is a book on How To Podcast - and it is explained in four simple steps. Once youve got the fundamentals down, Ill point you in the right direction of how to do even more; Ive even included a TON of examples of how others are doing the very thing you are looking to pull off.
NOTE - THIS IS NOT A TECHNICAL BOOK OR FOR THE TECHNICALLY MINDED.
When it comes down to it, podcasting is about content, not technology. Podcasting is no more about the technology than writing is about the pen and paper (or word processor) that is used to write a book.
This is a book for the more traditional user who likes podcasts - or at least the potential they represent - and wants to take a chance at producing them for themselves or for their company. If youre looking for a technical book, please put this one down. Dont worry, well talk about the tech; it just wont be the focus, because it shouldn't be the focus. I hope thats okay with you.
This is also not a How-to-Make-Money-in-Podcasting or a How-to-Market-your-Podcast book. Instead it is, quite simply, How To Podcast - and in four simple steps, no less. Of course, youre free to go on to any of those other topics (and Id be thrilled to help you with some of them) once youre done with this short book.
So, this is in fact a brief guide on how I, personally, podcast.
When Im done with that, there will be some examples of how some of my peers, listeners and students podcast. Youll notice the directions are short and straightforward because, quite simply, thats how this side of the process should be.
Its a lot more than just turning on a microphone and talking - but it is a lot less work than some people are trying to make it out to be.
Its four steps... Really. Thats it.
And this book explains them all.
Thanks for picking it up.
To make things even more valuable and to make sure you get the comprehensive story of How To Podcast, I have a number of bonus chapters from friends, students and peers on how they take on a different element of the four-step process. This is because there is no single correct way to do anything (other than to not make it hard!).
The Bonuses
As you might have read in the description for this book, I have a number of bonuses for you from different companies who would love to have your podcasting business - be it technology, training, etc. They all come with your little investment in this book. The goal is to give you the opportunity to earn back many more times the amount that you spent on this volume. Im proud to say that goal has been accomplished.
You can skip ahead to the bonus chapter for a quick peek right now if you want.

But you didnt just buy a book...
The nature of technology is that everything changes. At some point, a service I recommend in this book might change price, change its features or become more complicated than it needs to be. I want to do what I can to protect you from that happening. Were going to do that (to the best of my capabilities) in these two ways:
First, Im going to ask that you register this book. By registering this book Ill keep you up to date by email with any major changes that you need to know about. If I make a change to the book, Ill make sure you have a digital copy.
