First, we want to acknowledge our amazing teamAndrea Doering, Jessica English, Lindsay Davis, and the rest of the Revell team, as well as Rachelle Gardner at Books & Such Literaryfor being steady, smart, and wise when we are often off in our own creative worlds doing the things writers do. We couldnt do this without you guys, and we are so grateful for each of you.
We literally could not have written this book without our amazing hot mama friends, who not only happily tried out our challenges but gave us honest feedback, unwavering support, and hilarious anecdotes. The list is long, but special thanks to Christy Ahart, Mollie Burpo, Alisa Dusan, Michelle Halvorsen, Annie Hoffman, Katie Kessel, Laura Marion-Faul, Rebecca Palmer, Stevi Schuknecht, Leslie Spencer, Bianca Vimont, and Sarah Windham.
Some people may call us vanilla .
We moms of the carpool line, standing there in our black yoga pants while sipping our lattes and chatting about Dancing with the Stars . We girls who havent been whisked away to a private island for a hot weekend of lovemaking since... well, ever. We women who have been married for decades, mortgage owners for years, and proud Fruit of the Loom wearers for life.
Yes, some people may call us vanilla .
But we like to think of ourselves as red hot mamas . A little spicy. A little sweet. Women who love our husbands, love God, and want to have fun, flirty, and even sexy marriages. We want it all.
We live in a sex-crazed culture where many have bought in to the lie that in order to have a fulfilling sex life, women must be demeaned and men must be demonized. And this marriage-destroying, confidence-killing lie has led so many to believe that disrespect and selfishness are the only means to getting what we want. In bed. In our relationships. And in life.
Lets just come out and say it all together: that is a lie.
Its wrong.
Its hurtful.
And its killing our marriages.
But were willing to take a stand for the opposite. To proclaim that its okay for us women to want fulfilling, red hot sex lives and to demand respect and honor to boot. And that Gods intentions for sex are far from ho-hum.
Our goal as we write our new book, Hot Mama (Revell, 2015), is to help Christian women dispel the common misconceptions around sex so that they can have healthy, fulfilling sex lives that are not only fun but also hot, romantic, and swoon-worthy. And as we get ready to send our new book out into the world, were writing a series of Hot Mama Guides like this oneshort, compact messages where well challenge you to embrace your red hot self and give a glimpse of what we believe your sex life can be. And of what God desires for your marriage.
Will you join us this year as we explore sex, womanhood, and relationships in a God-honoring way? As we talk about whats right about sex and whats wrong about our cultures take on it? As we choose to pursue passion and intimacy and throw aside disrespect and dishonesty?
Come on, itll be fun.
Red Hot Is the New Grey
So theres this book. You may have heard of it?
Fifty Shades of Grey has become almost a feminist sex icon in our country in the last year. As the craze surrounding this book has grown, it has become a symbol of everything our culture believes about sex from a womans perspective.
And that makes us sad.
You dont have to have read the book to know that it is about a man who dominates a woman sexually. Who uses her and abuses her. Who provokes her and shuns her. Who demeans her and humiliates her. And yet, so many think this is a good thing because, well, its a love story. And its fiction. And for some reason this kind of symbolism is... desirable?
Well just come out and say that its not.
We have too much respect for ourselves and for our husbands to allow that kind of example to influence our sex lives. And so were proposing an alternative: red hot sex. A take on sex that is far from boringits flirty, fun, passionate, and intimate, yet it never demeans. It never disrespects. It never leaves you feeling lonely. And it never goes against Gods plan.
Sounds much better, doesnt it?
It is. And its so much healthier for your marriage, for your husband, and even for you.
Why Red Hot Is Better
Imagine this. Your husband walks into the kitchen as youre cooking the morning oatmeal and holds up a stack of Victorias Secret catalogs. Hey, hon, Im heading out to the gym with Ralph and Johnny.
Oh, great. Are you guys playing basketball?
No, Im thinking well just walk on the treadmill and talk about these. He points to the catalogs and smiles widely. The chick on page 7 is so incredibly hot. And I cant wait to see what Johnny thinks of the girl wearing that teeny-tiny bikini on page 5...
Well stop there. We know that your husband would never in a billion years even consider talking like this to you. Why? Because it would be a really, really stupid thing for him to do. And it would degrade the vows you made together, disrespecting the woman he promised to cherish. Not to mention it would probably result in him eating cereal for dinner for eternity.
Not smart.
Yet every minute a girl spends contemplating Fifty Shades of Grey (or other similar books or movies or articles) is a minute spent focusing on whats wrong with sex. We want to do the opposite. We want to focus on whats right about our relationships.
God made sex a beautiful, strong, powerful thing. We refuse to rob ourselves of the good in sex by demeaning it to Fifty Shades of Grey standards. Or even one shade of grey. Red hot sex is betterbecause it replaces Mr. Grey with Mr. Commitment and, in doing so, makes sex fun and flirty but never leaves someone feeling used or dirty or disrespected. And thats a big difference.
