INTRODUCTION: IN WHICH I PERSUADE YOU TO READ THIS BOOK
Would you like to know how to negotiate with terrorists to let a group of innocent captives free from a burning building? Would you like to know how to talk your girlfriend into having sex with you even when she feels fat and ugly? Would you like to convince people that they are ugly or fat while simultaneously making them feel that giving you money will make them prettier, thinner, and happier?
Would you like to know how to talk your brother into buying you a brand new state of the art entertainment system instead of taking his family on vacation? Would you like to know how to get your date to take off his clothes at the beach so that you can get revenge on him by calling the police and get him arrested for streaking in public?
Persuasion is all around you, and if youre not the one doing the persuading, then youre the one being persuaded, whether youre cognizant of it or not. Thats one of the glories of living in the digital age; you dont even have to step outside of your home to be convinced to swear loyalty to this or that product or to vote for this or that individual in the next election. Heck! Your social media knows how to give you personalized advertisements based on things you have searched, liked, or talked about with your friends in messages that you assumed were private.
You only have to listen to your favorite pop music and watch your favorite movies and television shows to see that they have helped you to formulate your views on love, life, popularity, fun, success, and beauty. Hearing and seeing something enough times can be enough to sway the opinion of the most skeptical among us. Maybe as a young buck you believed that women should never feel obligated to sleep with you, but, after years of watching sitcoms that treat beautiful women as objects and listening to your friends talk about their conquests, you find yourself believing that if you buy a woman dinner, you are at least a little entitled to have sex with her afterwards. That is popular cultures persuasion. That is the subtle pressure of promiscuous friends opinions rubbing off on you. That could be any number of other reasons, but it all comes down to one thing: persuasion.
Persuasion isnt just for the debate team or the European Union or political candidates trying to win an election. Its for everyone with the mental capacity to understand it and effectively employ it. This book will show you the many methods that are used to get what one wants from others. Naturally, to cover all persuasion tactics ever used would be impractical, but the big ones are here, from overt tactics like intimidation and bribery to more covert tactics like guilt tripping and seduction.
Who Is A Dark Persuader?
A dictionary might say that to persuade is to prevail on someone to do or believe something using any of a number of methods of advising or reasoning. The difference between persuasion and dark persuasion is in the intention.
A persuader might attempt to convince someone to do something without thinking through specific tactics or motivation or without any real understanding of the person they are attempting to persuade. A persuader might be concerned with creating the most good for the most people, like a diplomat who wants to prevent war between two world powers by creating political ties where there were previously none. A persuader might grasp at straws wildly hoping for something to stick.
A dark persuader always understands the bigger picture. He understands who he is trying to persuade, what motivates them, and how far he needs to take the tactic in order to succeed. He is typically unconcerned with the morality of his manipulation. He might see doing the right thing as a perk, but it doesnt have to be his biggest motivation. In the venn diagram of morality and self-gratification, a dark persuaders actions will not always fall into the overlapping area. A dark persuader will see the thing or person he wants and devise a way to get it by any means that seem most effective to him.
Its good to note that persuasion is never without moral implications, but to a dark persuader, these moral implications dont have to be a determining factor. A ladies man trying to pick up a beautiful woman doesnt have to be concerned with how the woman will feel when he sleeps with her and then doesnt call her; hes concerned with gratifying his sexual urges, looking cool in front of his friends, or any number of other things that he perceives to be more important than his sexual partners feelings.
A dark persuader can be the most selfish person in her social circle even while her friends are convinced that shes the least selfish person they know. She knows how to get exactly what she wants from her friends, and she can do it without them realizing that shes an imposition.
A dark persuader recognizes, often intuitively, where a persons weaknesses lie and can use those weaknesses to extract presents, words, and deeds that benefit the persuader but not necessarily the unsuspecting friend or colleague.
A business owner who employs illegal immigrants can lower the employee wages as much as he wants knowing that his employees have nowhere else to go if they want to remain in the country. A wife, knowing that her husband is sensitive about his recent weight gain, can persuade him to give her the chocolate candy bar that he won in a drawing at work.
The skills of the dark persuader run the gamut from trivial to unrivaled, because a dark persuader understands that persuasion is all about understanding people.
Personalities and Dark Persuasion
Dark persuasion can range from the petty to the catastrophic. A five-year-old persuading her little brother that he wants to give her all of his vanilla wafers is a lot more trivial than an ego-tripping dictator persuading a nation and then a world to willingly kill an entire ethnicity of people. Yet, in both circumstances, the persuader had an understanding of power, personalities, and motivations.
The older sister knew she could leverage the fact that her brother loved her and wanted her approval. She didnt have to be forceful, because she understood implicitly the extent of her power over him as the older sibling.
The dictator didnt start with force. He started with moving speeches and promises to bring his country out of its economic downward spiral. As people aligned themselves with him, he began to illustrate why he thought the country had been on the decline and propose a means of fixing this problem. Patriotism became synonymous with creating a world that consisted of one perfect race of people and eliminating all others. The people, wanting to stay in his good graces, did as he asked them. When things turned violent, they did what he wanted just to protect themselves. By the time the dictator was brought down, six million people had been chased from their homes, tortured, and brutally killed.
Whether Im talking about myself or about Hitler, its important to note that understanding personalities, motivations, and circumstances will always be the key to determining an effective manipulation.
It should be obvious that certain personalities and circumstances can make one person susceptible to a manipulation tactic and another person immune from the same strategy.
A people pleaser wont be able to say no to a personal favor, while a person with an independent streak might respond better to a bribe. An unintelligent or ignorant person wont see through faulty logic, while a rational, intelligent person will need a well-reasoned argument that doesnt rely on straw men or other logical fallacies. A person with low self-esteem might assume that they dont deserve to be treated with respect, while a person with high self-esteem might throw their drink in your face for suggesting that they want to go home with you. A financially unstable person will do things for money that a financially independent person would never be tempted by. A disabled person might not be able to stand up under physical abuse or intimidation in the same way that a physically strong person could. And these are only the tip of the iceberg.
