Preface As a boy I remember my mother being troubled by rheumatism When I - photo 1
Preface

As a boy I remember my mother being troubled by rheumatism. When I got older I realised she had a mild case of rheumatoid arthritis. I was distressed about the pain and discomfort it caused her.

My career in nutrition took me into extensive public speaking. Someone in every audience asked what could be done through diet to relieve arthritis. Because I realised just how debilitating and painful a disease it is and how little is known, I began a quest to find a dietary approach for its management.

I surveyed folk remedies because they usually have a scientific foundation. I reviewed the Chinese approach through vegetarian diets. I collected anecdotal information on alfalfa. I followed fasting experiments. They all led me to believe there was even more that diet could do.

During this time, much scientific research was being devoted to the prostaglandins, their metabolism, and to fish oils. While reading a paper by the Japanese group at Chiba Medical School, I realised that a dietary approach for arthritis lay in the dietary management of the prostaglandins. Louis Pasteur said, Chance favours the mind that is prepared, and I was certainly prepared. Dietary management of the prostaglandins required a carefully planned diet that could be supplemented with fish oils for nutritional insurance. So I designed such a diet.

I gave a very abbreviated diet plan to my mother. I described it from the platform when I spoke at meetings. Then I wrote a shortened version of Dos and Donts for people who wrote to me.

As I write, many people have tried the diet. It works!

I have received many letters, telling of its effectiveness. On speaking engagements, even on a radio phone-in show, people tell me how well it works. The glow in their eyes is worth a million words.

This book is much more complete than the original two-page list of Dos and Donts. I have included all of the hindsight, as much of the science as is reasonable, and all the folk remedies that work. Most important, I have included the experience of real people.

I believe that every person has something to, give his or her fellow shipmates on this beautiful spaceship we call Earth. I want this book to help people with arthritis regain control of their health and return quality to their lives. For me, nothing could be more gratifying.

The Concept:

The Right Food Can Help You Feel Better

Your Personal Commitment

Arthritis relief is within your power. All you have to do is make a personal commitment to follow the diet revealed in this book.

As the days and weeks pass it will cease to be a diet; indeed, it will become habit and you will wonder how you got along before.

THE PROMISE OF PAIN RELIEF

Hundreds of people have already committed themselves to this diet. Each one has experienced some relief. The following letter from Ohio is typical of the joyous responses Ive received.

Dear Dr Scala,

A miracle has come into my life. Prior to your diet I had days I could not walk. My hands were double in size. I had severe pain in my entire body. I could not lay down and sleep. My husband had to help me dress and comb my hair. I was taking medicine for pain; not much results. I was diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis. Your diet came in the mail at this time. I got on it immediately. I have been very faithful to it and the supplements with great results.

I went back to the doctor yesterday. I was feeling good with only pain in the morning. My muscles were becoming strong again. The doctor was in total shock when he saw me. He said he expected me to be much worse and in severe pain and not really able to walk well. I told him about my diet and he said it was working for sure and not to stop. I have only been on the diet for 14 days.

Dramatic results come quickly once you make your diet commitment, even though some pain and stiffness may still persist.

My diet works in exciting ways. It isnt actually a miracle; it just feels like one! Once youve got arthritis its here to stay. But your pain can be relieved.

DIET MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Let food be thy medicine, said Hippocrates around 400 B.C.

Dietary help for the chronically ill is not new. Examples are all around us, including diabetics, kidney patients, and wheelchair-confined paraplegics to name an obvious few. Chronic obesity or chronic underweight are examples so common we never think about them as illnesses.

Indeed, improving ones health through diet isnt confined to ill people. Athletes do it every day. Runners, mountain climbers, skiers, ballerinas, and swimmers are only a few that I have personally advised. And there are as many others as there are sports. Dietary support is probably as old as competition itself.

Some experts claim arthritis is different. But they are being proved wrong. Diet can help.

THE RIGHT FOOD REDUCES INFLAMMATION

Arthritis is a collection of over 100 diseases affecting one or more joints, and in some varieties the major organs. The word arthritis literally means inflammation of the joint. Arth is taken from the Greek meaning joint and itis meaning inflammation or infection. For most people, the diagnosis of arthritis may have involved many visits to the doctor, lab tests, and examinations. The diagnosis commonly pinpoints one of three arthritic conditions. Each of them can be helped by the diet you are about to begin.

  1. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease of the tissues inside the joint. It is the most common form of arthritis and is the form my diet is directed towards most specifically. Swollen knees and twisted hands are the images most people have of rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid is the most crippling and painful form of arthritis, but only one in six who get the disease develops deformitiesmost lead fairly normal lives, albeit with discomfort. With this diet, even that discomfort can be reduced.
  2. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease affecting the bones themselves as the cartilage that covers the movable bones breaks down. Diet will help reduce the inflammation that often accompanies this condition. The weight-control aspect of my diet is important for relieving this form of arthritis.
