    T HE FOLLOWING is an excerpt from the Constitutions & By-Laws of The Judo Black Belt Federation of the United States of America (Beikoku Judo Yudansha-kai Renmei):

    CHAPTER VII

    Section I Promotions

    Promotions or recommendations for change in Judo rank shall be made only by authorized member Yudanshakai who are recognized by the Kodokan Judo Institute and this Federation.

    Section II

    (a) Recommendations for change in Judo rank and promotions shall be subj'ect to the following provisions:

    1. Promotions below the rank of Nikyu shall be effected by individual instructors (Yudansha) who are recognized by member Yudanshakai, and submitted to the member Yudanshakai for administrative record.

    2. Promotions to the rank of Nikyu and above shall be effected only by member Yudanshakai (Boards of Promotion).

    Section III

    (a) Member Yudanshakai unable to promote certain grades of Yudansha shall forward their recommendations to the Chairman of the Board of Review for action.

    (b) All promotions to Shodan or higher will be properly recorded by the originating Yudanshakai, who shall immediately notify the Secretary-Treasurer of the Federation.

    Female ranks are the same as for male, except that the colored belts will be those with a thin white stripe along the length of the belt midway between the width edges. The above does not preclude in exceptional circumstances, the awarding of junior ranks of a higher age group to a boy or girl although he has not yet attained the chronological age of that rank group.

    # 7 Contest Rules of The Kodokan Judo

    CONTEST AREA

    Article 1. The Contest Area shall, as a rule, be a square platform, 30 feet (Approximately 9.09 meters) in length and width, raised to such a height as conditions (note) require, and covered with 50 pieces of "Tatami." (See Appendix A for "Tatami"). To prevent injuries and other dangers, the area around the perimeter of the Contest Area, shall further be bordered by either "Tatami" or mats for a width of 6 feet (approximately 1.82 meters) and lowered by 6 inches from the said platform.
