Foreword

The Art and Science of Judois an enduring contribution to the study of judo which provides the reader with the scientific basis and methodology to analyze techniques for critical factors impacting performance. Along the way, the authors share insights that make this new edition an important read for another generation of judo students.

When this book was first published as The Secrets of Judoin 1959 it was a groundbreaking achievement. Judo was largely unfamiliar outside of Japan, so its methods evoked an air of secrecy. This began changing in the United States in the 1950s, when military personnel stationed in Japan began returning home after being introduced to judo as a combative sport and form of self-defense.

Lindy Avakian, third degree black belt, served in the United States Air Force and studied judo in Japan during the early 1950s. In 1956, after 14 months of additional training, he completed the first foreign instruction course at the Kodokan Judo Institute. During his military service he trained United States Special Forces in self-defense. When he returned to California, he took on a leadership role in teaching and promoting judo.

Jiichi Watanabe was a noted instructor in Japan, sixth degree black belt, and one of the pioneers in the scientific study of judo. Together, these two authorities shed light on what makes judo work by investigating its scientific underpinnings.

This is not a book that deals with esoteric information. In fact, it helped strip away some of the mystery surrounding judo that was previously common outside of Japan. The Secrets of Judohas been renamed The Art and Science of Judoto better represent the role that science plays in the art of judo.
