Notice: The authors and publisher have made every effort to ensure that the patient care recommended herein, including choice of drugs and drug dosages, is in accord with the accepted standard and practice at the time of publication. However, since research and regulation constantly change clinical standards, the reader is urged to check the product information sheet included in the package of each drug, which includes recommended doses, warnings, and contraindications. This is particularly important with new or infrequently used drugs. |

Observation and inspection are the first components of the physical examination and perhaps play an important role in the diagnosis of otolaryngologic disorders. Pediatric otolaryngology is a very visual discipline. The majority of disorders that are seen and treated in this specialty have a characteristic appearance when viewed externally or endoscopically. This atlas has been developed to assist physicians in the primary care setting and the emergency department in the identification of conditions seen in pediatric otolaryngology. Since endoscopy and radiographs may not always be readily available to help the primary care physician obtain the correct diagnosis, illustrative endoscopic, radiographic, and pathologic images are included to give the examining physician a more complete picture and understanding of the disease process. However, this text cannot include all of the possible problems that physicians encounter in the head and neck; therefore, we have tried to describe the most commonly seen problems and their most representative presentations. We have also included some dental, dermatologic, and ophthalmologic diagnoses because they are common and are easily seen during the routine examination of the ear, nose, and throat. |
The text is divided into seven sections, corresponding to the general anatomic regions that are evaluated by the pediatric otolaryngologist. In each section, the material is presented in a specific order, focusing initially on normal anatomy before demonstrating congenital abnormalities, inflammatory disorders, trauma, and neoplasms. In this way, the clinician is able to develop an understanding of normal structures prior to encountering disease states. |
Treatment strategies are briefly discussed to give the reader a sense of the management of a disorder. Since the focus of this text is the recognition of disease states, based on the clinician's observation and historical factors obtained during the evaluation process, the reader is encouraged to consult comprehensive texts (see Suggested Reading) and journal articles for more complete discussions regarding current treatment options for the disorders presented. |
We hope that the use of this Atlas of Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders in Children will translate into more effective patient care. |
