ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
My secretary Betty Reohr spent countless hours typing and retyping this manuscript and helping with illustrations. Cynthia Watada, freelance illustrator from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, drew the illustrations in close collaboration with Betty.

Bob Combs, photographer for the Department of Radiology at the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, performed the photography of the radiographs. Jim Brunberg, MD, neuroradiologist at the University of Michigan Hospitals, and his staff of neuroradiologists performed the spine MRIs and CTs used in this book. Anthony Shork, Ph.D., biostatistician at the University of Michigan, provided statistical support. Brian Decker agreed to publish this manuscript almost immediately. He and his Assistant Medical Editor, Diane Dent, provided immediate replies to all inquiries which Betty and I made. Philip Benedetti, MD, neuroradiologist at Southern Oregon Imaging Center, Oregon, USA, provided many excellent photographs from his vast experience with spinal trauma MRI.

Derek Armstrong, MD, pediatric neuroradiologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, read and reread the manuscript and provided eight type-written pages of suggestions for improvements.

My family, Jane, Matt, Liz, Brian, and Tim, suffered patiently through my single-minded approach to this book.
Without the above people, this book would not have been possible. With their help, writing it was enjoyable.

INTRODUCTION
The two classic books on spinal trauma are Imaging of Vertebral Trauma by Richard Daffner and The Radiology ofAcute Spinal Trauma by John Harris and Stuart Mirvis. Each book contains approximately 20 illustrations devoted to the child's spine, most of which show normal variants. The present text is devoted almost entirely to children under 18 years of age. Post-traumatic conditions and normal variants are presented in an atlas format.

Chapters on various aspects of cervical trauma are presented before the atlas.

These chapters, particularly the one focusing on measurements, collect information essential to the accurate diagnosis of fractures and ligamentous injuries. We hope this text will help the radiologist and radiology resident become more precise in his or her evaluation of spinal trauma in children, who often are more difficult to evaluate than adults.
The imaging pathway used, at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital (University of Michigan Hospitals), for acute spinal trauma in children at Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, is shown in the following diagram:
