FOREWORD
Pediatric Gastroenterology has evolved as an independent entity from General Pediatrics and the subspecialty of Gastroenterology in Internal Medicine over the last 25 years. As a pediatrician desiring subspecialty training in this discipline in the late 1960s, I had to train in the gastroenterology division of the Medical Services of the Massachusetts General Hospital seeing adult patients and learning procedures (endoscopy, liver biopsy, and small bowel biopsy) in this patient population. One was expected to adapt approaches to diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal problems in adults to that of the pediatric population, assuming that GI problems in pediatrics were similar to those in adults. With the rapid evolution of Pediatric Gastroenterology, we now know that gastrointestinal problems in infants and children differ strikingly from those in the adult population and require separate comprehensive textbooks and reference atlases to aid pediatric gastroenterologists in their task of diagnosing complex anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract, infections unique to pediatrics, and inborn errors in gastrointestinal digestion and absorption.
Pediatric Gastroenterology has evolved to the extent that there are now several standard textbooks in the field, as well as journals such as Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, sponsored by the European and North American Societies of Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Nutrition, with greater than 2000 subscribers. A national meeting of these societies attracts more than 500 participants annually. With the publication of the first Atlas in this field this subspecialty attains yet another level of legitimacy within Pediatrics.
