This book is dedicated to you, the parents.

Foreword

Becoming new parents was one of the most stressful times in our lives. My husband and I had just finished grueling residency training, started our medical practices, and were finally ready for a child. Then the panic hit. How would we be able to do this? How could we make sure we raised a confident, secure, and loving child? Despite the fact that Im an OB/GYN and my husband is a general surgeon, we were terrified. We always joked that we would rather handle hemorrhaging patients than raise a child!

Then came Shari. My mother had given me a magazine article that featured Shari and how her plan could get your baby sleeping through the night by nine weeks. Our first meeting with her was when I was thirty-six-weeks pregnant, when our anxiety level was at an all-time high. Once we met her, we realized how invaluable she was on so many levels, not just sleep. Afterward, we felt incredibly empowered and ready for our challenge.

We followed her suggestions to a tee, and the plan alleviated our stress and the fear of the unknown. It gave us the knowledge of what to expect ahead of time. Whats more, it worked! It was amazing.

This plan also allows for the involvement of mother and father, thereby increasing the bonding between both parents and the child. My husband wouldnt give up his 12:00 a.m. feeding for anythingit was his private moment with our daughter that he will remember forever. It made us stronger as a couple because we were truly a team. Not only does this involvement give the father a special bond with the child, but it keeps everyone sleeping longer. I was able to sleep for six hours straight from the time our daughter was born, and that made a world of difference.

As a physician, I recognize the effects that decreased sleep has on a person. When youre tired, your fuse is shorter, and you dont react in the same manner as someone who has a healthy sleep pattern. With sleep deprivation you experience changes in mood and often feel irritable. All postpartum patients are at risk for baby blues and even depression. With the change in hormone levels, we have a tendency to feel sad, tearful, lonely, and even inadequate. When you top this off with exhaustion, it really puts patients at risk. Shari Mezrah has developed a formula that alters the postpartum experiences that sometimes occur in women after birth. Her plan of creating predictability gives balance and helps to lessen postpartum-related issues, thus ensuring a happy and healthy mother and baby. By increasing the amount of sleep, youre better prepared to tolerate the physical and hormonal changes that come.
