INTRODUCTION
If the path before you is clear, youre probably on someone elses.
Joseph Campbell
Who Are You Saying No To?
M y nephew recently asked me to be the subject of a school project requiring him to write a memoir of someone in his parents generation.
The core of his project was my answer to this one question: What do you want to be remembered for?
It came out of left field amidst other questions that were simpler and more instinctual to answer.
But this one stopped me in my tracks, and I sat there stumbling as this 15-year-old sat patiently and curiously, waiting for my answer.
I found myself doing a Rolodex-flip through various moments in my life. My achievements, my failures, my journey, searching for a theme and meaning to it all.
I found myself at a loss, realizing that this one question struck a nerve regarding what I really want to be remembered for:
To never feel stuck in life and help others feel the same.
In that moment, I realized I had been saying no to myself. No to my dreams. No to my deepest desires. No to the person I knew I could become. No to the bigger goals I had been burying in my mind for years. I was more stuck in my life and in my head than I wanted to admit.
A school project for my nephew became a wake-up call for me.
And hence this book, which is about helping people stop putting their lives on hold and start taking action now. It will map out how to reset the course of your life from day-to-day routine to creating your happiness and fulfilling your life goals.
If you find yourself in a place where you:
- feel like there is something more in life for you
- find yourself stuck in a rut
- think you should be happy because youve made it, but find yourself searching for more
Then this book is for you, my friend. I believe the reason why so many people feel stuck and underwhelmed with the direction of their lives is that we take time for granted.
People put off the activities they love until the weekends. They stick their dreams on the back burner because they let excuses get in the way.
They find themselves repeatedly saying things like: Its not the right time. Its too risky. Im too young for that. Im too old for that. I dont have time for that. When I have enough money, Ill do that. When I get done with this one thing, then Ill get to it.
People put off the things that are the most important or exciting to them because they live under the false assumption that there is always time.
Then they stare at the clock every work week just waiting for Friday to come.
They wait to take the vacations and go to destinations they dream of until they get time off.
They wish weekdays away in a job they hate, so they can enjoy the weekends.
They put adventures, hobbies, and time to do the things that make them happy on hold until retirement.
People do this because its safer to take time for granted than it is to think there will never be enough of it.
Because of this, we never challenge ourselves to ask the difficult questions.
What if that time never arrives? What if you fall into the habit of filling your weekends with work rather than play?
What if you never take off time from work because you can never catch up on the work in front of you?
What if when that time to enjoy life does arrive, you wont be able to do the things youve waited so long to do?
What if your life is shorter than you plan it to be?
We avoid these questions because theyre easy to avoid and theyre difficult to answer.
T he reason why more people are putting the things they want to enjoy on hold and feeling less satisfied in life is that theyre living for the future, and not for the present. They focus on the day-to-day work, stress, and success or lack thereof. They look ahead to goals and look back to their past, but forget about the current moment.
Then, the precious moments they have to themselves are typically spent looking at a screen for the latest post, trend, or gossip.
All to rinse and repeat starting every Monday.
People think the formula for doing what they want is to use time to wait for an opportunity in the future, rather than taking advantage of the time right in front of them. So it leaves us distracted. People fill their lives with more busy work and chatter.
To break this addictive and self-perpetuating cycle, this book is going to reveal how to actually break away from feeling stuck in life to create the life you truly want in 90 days. It will guide you on how to stop letting unhappiness, stress, and life routines become your norm, so you can hit the reset button and get more fulfillment and joy from your life. It will help you reassess whats working for your life right now and what isnt. It will put the focus back on what you want, rather than what youre supposed to do.
Together well go from a transformation from living life on autopilot to being in the drivers seat.
