Many of my clients have asked me for tips on giving better massages to help their partner with aches and pains. Sometimes theyre intimidated by massage or have decided that theyre just not good at it. Some say massage hurts their hands or theyre not sure about using the right pressure.
Learning to massage another human can be tricky at first, but Im here to tell you that its a skill you can learn and enjoy. For example, the first person I massaged in school nearly kicked me because he was extremely ticklish and it was hard to find the right amount of pressure to suit him.
Practice makes perfect, though. After many years of working with this healing art, and over five years as a professional massage therapist, I can find all kinds of things under the skin with my eyes open or closed. I help people ease their pain from a holistic standpoint and gain relief from stress and fatigue. I have also taught a couples massage class for people who want to support their partners well-being and enjoy a healthy, enriching way to spend quality time together.
My massage practice, Fire & Ice Therapeutic Massage, was voted best massage by North Carolinas MatthewsMint Hill Weekly in 2019. I was nominated for Charlotte Media Groups Small Businessperson of the Year that same year. I did a short series on MindBodyRadio in January 2020 about massage and bodywork where I answered questions from callers about massage. In addition, I have gone on to become an approved continuing education provider, received my certifications in life, business, relationship, and mind-set coaching, and recently completed my business consulting certification.
I own a second business called the Massage Innovation Network for Therapists that provides continuing education for massage therapists. I teach them new techniques beyond the basics of what they learn in school and coach them toward brighter, longer careers.
Whether you are in a new relationship or have been in a marriage for decades, I encourage you to read through this book in its entirety. The knowledge and background information youll gainincluding some light biology and anatomy lessonswill help you refine your skills and give truly transformative, bliss-inspiring massages. This book can also prepare you for a closer, more nurturing and intimate relationship with the one you love.
The goal of this book is to help you grow in your relationship and in your health by sharing massage with your partner. The first part of this book will help you gain confidence in using your hands to provide healing touch. It will help you understand why massage may be beneficial to your budding relationship. As you begin to grow more sensitive to your partners needs corresponding to touch, I hope that you will find a deeper level of connection. The second part of this book will teach you techniques from Eastern and Western traditions around the world, as well as how to strengthen and develop the skills you have in your own set of hands. The last part of the book will guide you through the body to prepare you to perform massage sequences for special situations and circumstances.
Everyday life can be full of distractions. Couples often spend most of the day apart, and even when they are together they easily fall into domestic busyness. When they do focus on each other, they might talk through their days, sharing the ups and downs, venting, or simply trying to connect to each other through words. Although talking is important, theres another powerful tool for relieving stress and reconnecting with the one you love: soothing touch.
A kind touch can ground the racing mind and bring it into the present moment. Massage is a nourishing practice and a simple, intuitive means for connecting to your partner. Its a way to set time aside to nurture and invest in your relationship, fostering love, trust, patience, intimacy, and health. This book will explain the many benefits of massage and why it can be the perfect way to express caring, affection, and love.
