Acknowledgments
Authorship is not a solitary endeavor, and many people have contributed, in one way or another, to the genesis of this book. During my thirty years of studying natural history in the Great Basin, my two most constant field companions were Hugh Mozingo, a peripatetic botanist, and Peter Herlan, the late curator of natural history at the Nevada State Museum. Some of my fieldwork was accomplished in the company of either a physician or a physiologist-John M. Davis or Jack Knoll. During the years of 1965, 1966, and 1967, Jack and I systematically retraced, after the lapse of one hundred years, the footsteps of the great nineteenth-century ornithologist, Robert Ridgway, along the lower reaches of the Truckee River below the Big Bend.
I have spent a considerable amount of time either birding or working on bird problems with some of my graduate students-particularly David Salter, Tom Burns, Ron Panik, John Gustafson, Verne Woodbury, and David Worley. In addition, I have exchanged information about Great Basin birds or birded with good people like Ingrid Hanf, Bob and Jessie Alves, John Kartesz, Dick Ankers, Ella Knoll, Al Knorr, John Biewener, Chuck Lawson, Bill Mewaldt, Gary Herron, and others. Over the years I have enjoyed some stimulating teacher-pupil relationships and acquired some new knowledge from students enrolled in my university courses in ornithology. Finally, this book is based not only on my field observations but also on the published observations of legions of keen amateur and professional ornithologists.
