Prologue
One of the most important keys to success is having the discipline to do what you know you should do, even when you dont feel like doing it. - Unknown
A note to the reader.
Hi, I'm Gemma Ray, and it has always been a lifelong ambition of mine to write a book.
I was challenged by my business partner in this, Ben Jones, to write some books on a series of topics. Some topics I might not necessarily know anything about. Yet that was the joy of being an author with this kind of non-fiction book. The task in hand is to immerse yourself in research and take all your learning into a new written format that would be easy to understand, easy to follow and easy to apply.
So this book started out as a test. A test to see if I could actually research the content, write a book, publish and launch a book. The biggest test though is that people would read the book, be inspired and take action from it - resulting in them achieving their goals.
So, I chose to write about the subject of self discipline and avoiding procrastination as it was something I was overcoming and constantly working on for myself.
I spent much of 2016 working on my own self discipline by consuming many of the books you will see referenced in this book. Those books changed my life, my mindset and my productivity levels. I worked alongside experts in self discipline and was able to apply their expertise and knowledge, principles and methods in so many areas of my life - particularly my job (the one that paid the bills) working as freelance communications consultant. Yet the hilarious irony of this book is that actually, in the beginning, I had no self discipline to write it.
After three months of just talking about the book, a frustrated Ben (who is officially the world's greatest accountability partner) via video call in Thailand, set me a challenge to set aside an hour. In that hour, all I had to do was put pen to paper and outline the chapters of the book. Up until this point, every single idea for the book was stored... in my head.
Ben politely, but firmly, instructed me to empty my head of all the stuff I knew already and all the knowledge I already possessed and put into action when it came to self discipline. He virtually, via his laptop, on the other side of the world, held my hand and encouraged me to take that first tiny step. He stayed on the call with me, and was shocked to see that in just 45 minutes, not only had I brain dumped everything I knew in a mind map, but I'd written the chapter headings and outlined the sub headings too.
Then... Do you know what happened? I saw it all laid out. My plan. My book. I realised I really was a little expert in all of this. I realised I already applied so many of these self discipline principles in many areas of my life. I got cross. With myself. I'd wasted 3 months. But, I drew an imaginary line underneath it all, cleared my diary and I mustered every fibre of self discipline I could and wrote the first draft of this book in just 3 days.
Self discipline is a work in progress for me. Just like you need to go to the gym regularly to keep your muscle tone, or eat well to keep your weight down, I believe that self discipline and self development is like the gym for the mind. You have to commit to it, every day. The more you do, the easier it gets.
I will never profess to have all my stuff together in my head and my life. I own my own business and I do work round the clock. I balance this with being a mum to Blake who is 7 and very energetic and support my husband who has a demanding job he loves and a clear career path. Like you, I'm busy. Really busy. But I make sure that I make time for self disciplined actions.
Time for me, time for myself, time to achieve my goals.
It's not been easy, but it has been so rewarding. Especially now writing this. I've realised how far I've come and I'm excited for where your own self discipline journey could take you too.
I am absolutely thrilled that you have purchased this book and given yourself a little time to learn more about how to flex that self discipline muscle and make more time and in turn create even more energy to achieve your own goals.
