Valery Akimov holds a doctorate degree in engineering from the Academy of Civil Defence of the Ministry for Emergencies, Civil Defence and Natural Disaster Response of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM) and the title of Professor at Moscow State Aviation and Technological University (MOSATU) of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation. He is the Director of the All-Russia Research Institute Federal Centre for Civil Defence and Emergencies Studies of EMERCOM, and chairs the sub-department on Natural and Technological Hazards and Risk Management at MOSATU.
Alexander Libman holds doctoral degrees from the University of Mannheim (Dr. rer. pol.) and the Russian Academy of Sciences (Cand. Sc.), as well as a post-doctoral habilitation (Dr.Sc.) from the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr Libman is Assistant Professor at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) and Affiliated Research Fellow at the East China Normal University (Shanghai).
Alla Mozgovaya holds a PhD degree in Sociology from the Department of Sociology of the Moscow State University. Dr Mozgovaya is the Risk Sociology Department Director at the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and heads a centre for the Russian Sociological Association.
Boris Porfiriev holds a doctorate degree from the Institute of Systems Analysis of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the title of Professor from the Academy of Interior and the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation. Prof. Porfiriev heads the Centre for Risk Analysis and Risk Management and the Laboratory for Analysis and Forecasting of Natural and Technological Hazards to Economic Development, both at the RAS Institute for Economic Forecasting. He holds the Professors chair in the Department for International Economy and Politics at the Higher School of Economics (National State University) in Moscow.
Elena Shlykova holds a PhD in Sociology from the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. Dr Shlykova is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Sociology of Risk in the same institute.
Greg Simons holds a doctoral degree from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand for his thesis dealing with the changes in the Russian mass media system during the first term in office of Vladimir Putin. He is currently employed at the Centre for Crisis Management Research and Training in the Swedish National Defence College and at the Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Uppsala University. In addition to this, he also occasionally teaches public relations at Turiba Business College in Riga. Dr Simons is also on the OSCEs roster of experts.
Dmitry Strovsky has a PhD in Political Science, and is a Professor of the Journalism Faculty at Ural Federal University in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Dr Strovsky is in charge of the international journalism course, and is a prolific author of books and articles on various issues concerning the historical and contemporary situation of Russian journalism. In addition to this, he is a columnist for the Ural version of Novaya gazeta. He has also received fellowships and has taught at universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Poland.
Alla Yazkova holds a doctorate degree in History and Political Science from the Institute of Universal History of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), and the title of Professor from the Institute of International Relations the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Prof. Yazkova heads the Centre for Mediterranean and Black Sea Studies at the RAS Institute of European Studies. She is a Member of the Academy for Pedagogical and Social Sciences.

This volume is linked to the Crisis Management Europe Programme at CRISMART (the Centre for Crisis Management Research and Training) at the Swedish National Defence College in Stockholm, Sweden. It represents a number of years of co-operation and research between CRISMART and the Russian Academy of Sciences. The spirit of this collaboration is to foster an exchange of ideas and best practice between practitioners and academics, with a view to enhancing the ability of societies to cope more effectively with crises and manage them.
