Successful Nurse Communication is
dedicated to Gabriel Summerhill.

In his memory, I hope this book
provides students with compelling
reasons and strategies for
communicating effectively and
respectfully in order to provide safe,
compassionate care and experience
rewarding careers.

Preface

W riting a textbook for nurses is an incredible honor. As an RN for more than 35 years and a consultant for almost 20, I am excited by the opportunity to convey the expertise I have gained in communication and collaboration to nursing students all over the United States and possibly beyond. It is an amazing honor. But that is not what has motivated me to write this book.

A combination of education, nursing practice, and personal experience has led me to discover extremely important and easily overlooked connections between our ability to communicate effectively and favorable outcomes involving patient safety, the cultures in which we work, and our own health. I want all healthcare professionals and consumers to see these connections so that we can work together for positive change.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Gabriel Summerhill, a boy who died at the age of 20 months as a result of multiple medical errors. He is one of many victims of preventable death and injury in a healthcare setting. I didnt know Gabriel, but I have come to know his mother, Leilani Schweitzer, as we have crossed paths in our respective work for making healthcare safer. She, too, has seen the connections between communication and patient safety, but at a devastating price.

As human beings, we will never be perfect, but as nurses, we must be committed to providing the safest and most compassionate care possible. While doing so, we deserve to practice in workplaces that understand, respect, and support the complexity of our work. Effective and respectful communication is essential to these ideals, and this is what has motivated me to write and revise Successful Nurse Communication.
