For Yves R. Simon, philosophy has an affinity to science, not in the sense that philosophy is a mere metascience, a commentary on the sciences, but rather because it shares the same aim as science: the search for explanation. The philosophy Simon espouses is philosophical realism which, following Jacques Maritain, he prefers to call critical realism. Against the prejudice that only some version of philosophical idealism, be it critical or absolute, is capable of understanding positive science. Simon, in Foresight and Knowledge, develops a philosophy of science form a realistic perspective. Philosophy of science or the critique of science, as it was known in France, is according to Simon, metahphysics in the exercise of its critical function. Simon selects as the central focus of the treatise the problem of determinism, causality, and chance. Simon shows that the concept determinismmust be understood in different conceptual systems, such as a philosophy of nature and physics; in the latter, determinism is conceived as a possibility of certain and exact prediction.

Introduction
The fortunes of a book may depend on a number of factors other than its intrinsic merit. Among these factors are to be reckoned the language in which it was written, the publisher and its system of distribution, and the time it appeared. The French original of Foresight and Knowledge was published in 1944 by ditions de l'Arbre, one of four new publishing houses that appeared in Quebec in 1941 (the others were Fides, Varits, and Pony). The name (l'Arbre) "was a metaphor for the independence of French Canadian literature which no longer wished to be seen as a branch of French literature but as an autonomous tree."1 Of course, it must be noted that these new publishers flourished at a time when France had been cut off from the Quebec literary market by the Occupation. Wallace Fowlie, the noted literary critic, wrote to Henry Miller recommending ditions de l'Arbre in the following terms: "'There is a publishing house in Montreal of a liberal Catholic mind (in the tradition of Maritain) that publishes a number of good books.'"2 He goes on to say that "'the two literary directors have waged a good fight against reactionary clerical forces.'"3
Not only did the ditions de l'Arbre publish books, but the company also established a journal, La Nouvelle Relve, which lasted from 1941 to 1948. Yves R. Simon published a number of pieces in La Nouvelle Relve during the 1940s.4 In the period following the Second World War Quebec literary publishing entered into a period of crisis brought on largely by the re-entry of the French in the Quebec literary market. As one observer put it, "'French publishers took back their rights.'"5 While ditions de l'Arbre published a list of new works in 1948, by 1949 none at all were listed.6La Nouvelle Relve as well ceased publication in 1948. Of the four debutantes of 1941, only Fides survived, and it continues to be an important publishing house today.
It seems that this brief account of the life and demise of the ditions de l'Arbre is relevant to understanding the fate of Prvoir et savoir, often ignored when available and hardly available when it might have had some effect. The book was distributed in Can-

ada and in the United States, but it would have been unlikely that it found its way to Europe during the war, and there is not much evidence that it was disseminated there afterward. It is likely, then, that it was denied an audience in France.
