ABOUT THE AUTHORS
CHUCK LUKACS has been illustrating for the science-fiction and fantasy community for the past seven years. Hes spent the last five years working in oils, but he has worked in many different crafts, from historical book-craft, papermaking, and wood engraving to ceramics.
In terms of philosophical influence, Buddhism, Taoism and a number of world mythologies have played rather large roles in Chucks art. He is a huge fan of jazz music and comedy. He also keeps on top of global political and economic news and is an activist and advocate of the Progressive Peace movement.
Chuck lives happily with his wife and dog and is about as sane as a chickpea sandwich. Lacking any useful social skills, and being prone to extraordinary lapses of common sense, he stays up late into the morning dreaming his daft-wit little dreams, trying his best to bring them into light. When he isnt pushing paint around, hes practicing traditional archery, thinking about solar- and wind-power projects, craft brewing or playing with manned kites, musical effects, instruments and windup toy design. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Gracious thanks to all my friends and family, including Jim, Chris, Thomas, all the fine folks at F+W Publications and the art directors and editors from Wizards of the Coast and Alderac Entertainment Group for their support over the years. Also thanks to fans who support the arts, and believe that artists can make positive change in our society and our planet.
DEDICATION
To my beautiful wife, Melanie: were it not for your hard work, encouragement and understanding, I would not be able to bring my images to light.
JIM PAVELEC
In 1974, after he viewed The Exorcist at the tender age of two, a pattern began to evolve in young Jim Pavelecs life, one that he cultivates to this day. That pattern is an ever increasing love of imagery most foul. Demons and monsters and devils of all sorts consume his every waking hour, and serenade him throughout the night.
But what would be the best way for this fledgling neophyte to express his love? The options were many, but his eventual choice: paper and pencil, and a little paint, too.
Off on his own, the caterpillar began to change into a butterfly. Armed with his visual encyclopedia of artists past, a firm hatred of humanity and the desire to dominate, Jim set off into the gaming world where he slaved tirelessly for companies such as Wizards of the Coast on their Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons lines, and Upper Deck on their World of Warcraft game. Most recently he produced Hell Beasts, a how-to book for IMPACT Books.
At the present time Jim lives a comfortable life with his girlfriend, Aimee, in a house full of that imagery most foul, which makes him happiest of all.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank Thomas, Chuck and Chris for all of their hard work on this book. Seeing their outstanding work motivated me to work harder. I would also like to thank my parents for allowing me the freedom as a child to pursue the things that interested me, even if they didnt really understand or like them, and for instilling in me an unbreakable work ethic. My sincerest gratitude goes to Aimee for being the best girl there is.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the people at IMPACT Books, from editorial and design to sales and marketing: you guys are the best. Thanks again for the opportunity to wreak havoc under your banner.
DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to the late Thomas Manning. A day does not and will not pass that I do not think of him. I have never met a person as knowledgeable about the entirety of art (except maybe for his wife, Christine). He introduced me to art movements and artists that I would have never come across on my own, and, for that, among many other things, I owe him an eternal debt. I will do as much as I can in the future to pay back on that debt and to honor the man.
Seeing the inanimate corpse of your best friend is a terrible thing for a human to endure. If only the world we spent so much time creating, even for one day, could actually exist, what a glorious undead fiend he would make.
