Secret Gardens of Somerset offers a personal tour of 20 of the UKs most beguiling gardens in this much-loved area of southern England, defined by its distinctive horticulture, rolling hills, picturesque villages and the most traditional English landscape.Abigail Willis and Clive Boursnell give you privileged access to 20 gardens, from a highly productive working flower farm to very personal private retreats, revealing their history, design and plant collections, in the company of their devoted owners and head gardeners. In the footsteps of artists and trend-setters from Victorian designers such as Harold Peto to planting visionary, Gertrude Jekyll as well as contemporary pioneer Piet Oudolf, we find a series of beguiling country gardens of different sizes and atmospheres, which have shaped the English identity, and in different ways express the ideals of English life. The gardens: The American Museum and Gardens, Barley Wood Walled Garden, Batcombe House, The Bishops Palace, Common Farm, Cothay Manor, East Lambrook Manor, Elworthy Cottage, Forest Lodge, Greencombe Gardens, Hauser & Wirth Somerset, Hestercombe, Iford Manor, Kilver Court, Midney Gardens, Milton Lodge gardens, The Newt in Somerset, Stoberry House, Westbrook House, and Yeo Valley Organic Garden. Most of the gardens included here are privately owned and usually open to the public. Meanwhile, all of these landscapes can now be enjoyed through the eyes of the owners themselves.Tour even more magnificent English gardens with Secret Gardens of the Cotswolds and Secret Gardens of East Anglia.

Introduction

S OMERSET STEPS INTO the limelight every summer for the internationally revered Glastonbury Festival and its three Cs (cricket, Cheddar cheese and cider), but it is the countys outstanding gardens that should be grabbing our attention. Blessed with a mild moist climate and fertile soil, Somerset has long been a good place to garden. The remarkable trilogy of historic gardens at Hestercombe (see ) have put Somerset in the vanguard of contemporary gardening.

Horticulture has shaped the land here. Horticultural peat was extracted from the Levels on an industrial scale between the 1960s and 1990s, and, although many gardeners have forsworn this non-renewable medium, peat digging continues today albeit on a much smaller scale. The nursery trade too has flourished here, and featured such notable plantspeople as James Allen (the Victorian Snowdrop King of Shepton Mallet) and James Kelway (founder in 1851 of the eponymous nursery, which is still the UKs largest grower of peonies and irises). The modern herbaceous border would be the poorer without such indispensable selections as PapaverPattys Plum and GeraniumRozanne, both raised in Somerset.

The countys varied geography is part of its allure and the borrowed landscapes it offers to gardeners are second to none. As well as the low-lying Levels, its borders encompass a Jurassic coastline, pastoral vales and remarkably diverse hill ranges the Mendips, the Poldens, the gently rolling Mid Somerset Hills, and to the west the Blackdown, Brendon and Quantock hills. Therefore many gardens in these pages revel in stunning hillside settings (see, for example, ) hold their own against inspiring architectural backdrops.

More than ever Somerset is worth the detour, but dont expect cookie-cutter English gardens. This county has always been independent minded; its not as smart as the Cotswolds or Wiltshire. When asked to define Somersets appeal, the gardeners in this book responded with variations on a theme. Its unpretentious, its a working county, not a museum, they would comment approvingly: Its not been tidied up.

Thus liberated, Somersets gardens can be bracingly non-conformist as youll discover at Midney Gardens (see ).

Somerset is a large county and, although Ive lived here for twenty years, one of the joys of writing this book has been the chance to explore it in more depth over a glorious year. The gardens in these pages will similarly take you on a cross-county tour and I can think of no better introduction to Somerset, particularly when accompanied by Clive Boursnells beautiful photographs.

Whether visiting Somerset for the first time, or the fifth, its gardens will always be rewarding, for like all the best ones they are living works of art and are continually evolving. I hope you enjoy discovering them too.
