Introduction
Welcome to the second edition of Essential Photoshop. The first, published in 2013 preceded the launch of Adobe Photoshop CC and was based on Photoshop CS5. Designed to be timeless, you can still apply its lessons to the latest version of Photoshop CC as well as earlier Photoshop versions back to the year 2000.
So why then a second edition, focussed on Photoshop CC?
When I wrote the first book I wanted to cut through the noise of unwanted and unneeded features in Photoshop. Since the launch of Photoshop CC, those unnecessary features have in my opinion mushroomed. Some new features are very useful, but you can safely ignore many, and I want to explain which.
Initially I intended to make minor changes to the text of the first book, but as writing progressed, I decided to create a completely new book. If you own the first book, you may recognise a few of the example photos but Ive replaced most with new examples. What youre reading is a completely new book although many of the tools and techniques are the same with a few additions.
The first edition of the book came about because people were asking for a quick and easy way to learn Photoshop. This need still exists, but I now believe I can better help people master the added complexity Photoshop CC introduces. I also receive regular emails asking for a new version of the book, focussing on Photoshop CC and making it available in print.
Photoshop is not intuitive or easy to use, but it is very powerful. Its also become something of an industry standard for those in the photography and graphics industry. This book will help you to quickly learn the tools that can help you most with your photo editing.
Is this Book for You?
If youre already confidently using Photoshop, can assess an image, identify required adjustments and understand how to apply these, then this is probably not the book for you. If youre a graphic artist and not interested in photographic adjustments, then it's probably not for you either.
If youre looking for a book to cover all the intricacies of Photoshop CC, or to use as a comprehensive reference, this isnt the book for you. But if you want to quickly learn and understand how to edit photography with Photoshop, start here.
If you are a photographer who goes cold at the thought of having to edit your images in Photoshop, this book will help. Perhaps you are new to digital photography, unfamiliar with Photoshop, uncomfortable with image editing or just plain scared of complex software. If so then this book will help.
This book assumes you know nothing about Photoshop. It will quickly take you through the basics of the interface before explaining each essential tool and technique. You will learn why adjustments work and not just the steps to apply them. Best of all, you will understand Photoshop without feeling you need to memorise lots of steps. This provides a foundation from which to progress to more advanced techniques in the future if you wish.
But the best thing about this book is that it leaves out most of Photoshop. Photoshop is a powerful but very complex application. You can manipulate images in many ways and theres always multiple ways to achieve the same result. Unfortunately, this makes it very confusing to learn. But this book cuts out everything you dont need to know, allowing you to focus on mastering just a few tools and techniques. Thats why its called Essential Photoshop CC.
How to Use this Book
It's important to understand that this book doesnt cover every aspect of Photoshop and its interface. In fact, it only covers a small number of the features and for a very good reason. You dont need to know everything and trying to will only confuse you.
The content of this book is carefully organised to provide a complete photo-editing approach. This isn't a book of random, unrelated techniques, where youre expected to pick the one you need. The book outlines a complete and integrated editing workflow, to help you to systematically improve your photography. Its therefore very important to read it completely and in the order the chapters appear.
Please do not skip ahead and please dont miss any sections. Each chapter and its content will build on the previous ones. When you miss something, you run the risk that you wont be able to understand later chapters. This helps to reduce repetition and speeds your learning. By the final chapter you will know how to apply the essential Photoshop CC tools, as part of a non-destructive workflow, and you will have the knowledge to transform your photography.
One final important point to getting the greatest value from this book is to download the practice files from my website. Youll find these on the Downloads for Books page
Throughout the book you will find carefully created exercises to complete. Most people find they learn best through a combination of information, clear instruction and practice. Thats why its so important to download the practice images and follow the exercises. They will help to reinforce the key information.
Note on Photoshop Versions
This book features screenshots from the Mac Photoshop CC (2019) edition. If youre using an earlier version or even a later version of Photoshop CC, please dont worry. Whilst there have been many changes between the different versions of Photoshop CC, most tools we use remain largely unchanged. Yes, there may be differences, but they are minor and dont affect how you use these tools. And because these tools form the core of Photoshop CC, Im confident they will continue to work the same way in the future.
Mac and Windows Users
This book was illustrated using the Mac version of Photoshop CC (2019). This should not cause any problems if youre a Windows PC user, as the software is consistent across both Mac and Windows operating systems. Where Ive made mention of keyboard commands or shortcuts, the Mac version is first followed by the Windows PC version.
Users of Photoshop Elements
This book does not apply to Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements is sometimes described as a cut down version of Photoshop, but this is misleading. The Elements software works differently to Photoshop CC, and this book does NOT cover Photoshop Elements.
