Chapter One -Creation
Allunga, a small, dark-skinned boy with acheeky smile sat in the shade of a giant eucalyptus tree with hisgrandfather Bapp.
Allungas name meant the Sun and his blackeyes glittered at times, as bright flashes of sunlight. Hisgrandfather, slim, old and with very grey hair laughed with hismuch-loved grandson. Bapps name meant Blue Gum Tree and he hadonce been as tall and strong as his name suggested.
Allunga loved to hear stories of the oldtime, the Dream Time. Tell me, grandfather about the Dream Timeand how our land came to be made, please grandfather Bapp!
Bapp smiled, closed his dark eyes and said.Get comfortable, boy, this will take some time!
And this is what he told him - The DreamTime long ago was a special everywhere time where the ancestralheroes and gods lived. In this special time, animals spoke and hadgreat powers and the Earth was still being formed. The Dream Timepeople lay down the rules and ideas for the Koori culture.
In our tribe, grandson, we tell of Bunjil theEaglehawk who lived in the Dream Time. He was a creator deity andancestor with his friend, the trickster Crow; they readied the landfor our people.
Bunjil had two wives and a son, Binbeal therainbow. His brother is called Balayang, the bat. He was helped bysix wirmums or wise men who represent the clans of the Eaglehawktribe.
These were Djurt-djurt the nankeen kestrel,Yukope the parakeet, Thara the quail hawk, Dantum the parrot,Tadjeri the brushtail possum and Turnong the gliding possum. Thesebird ancestors of ours, created the mountains, rivers, plants, animals and good laws for our tribes to live by.
Bunjil then gathered his wives and sons andasked Crow, who had charge of the winds, to open his magic bags andlet out some wind. Crow opened a bag in which he kept hiswhirlwinds and willy-willies and created a cyclone, which uprootedtrees and blew the sand about.
Bunjil was not satisfied, he wanted astronger wind! Crow opened his most mighty magic bag and a hugewind blew out of it! Bunjil and his wives, sons and daughters wereblown upwards into the dark sky.
Bunjil himself became the star Altair and histwo wives, the black swans, became stars on either side. And so theEarth was ready for mankind to settle here and hunt and make theirtribes.
And do we all own the land now,Grandfather? asked Allunga, his eyes bright with interest.
Bapp laughed, Who can own water, soil andair? The land, mountains, rivers and song-lines are for travellersto traverse the large continent, not for personal ownership or tobe mined and destroyed. We pass them on to future grandchildren. They are not ours!
Allunga asked his eyes wide, Tell me of thesong-lines?
His Grandfather sighed; this grandson of hishad so many questions. Song-lines are also called Rainbow Serpenttrails. The Rainbow Serpent was one of the most powerful creatorgods. It snaked around this land of ours from way up north fromUluru, to the west, east and south!
The ancestors could walk this magical routeand find good hunting, safe shelter and meet and trade with otherfriendly tribes. They are called song-lines because each tribewould learn certain songs and by singing them in a certain rhythmand length, they could navigate their way along tracks to theirnext destination.
Allunga scratched his head, I dontunderstand!
Grandfather began to sing a song about thegreat fish in the sea, the whales, the dolphins and the beaches; itseemed to the small boy that it went for a long time.
