eriving inspiration for itstitle from a speech delivered in the U.S.Senate in 1860 by Jefferson Davis, dubbed as one of the mostinfamous racists in American history, Stamped from the Beginning:The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America traces theextensive and agonizing history of racist ideology from 15thcentury Portugal to the present. In condensing 500 years of eventsinto a 592-page book, Ibram X. Kendi, one of Americas leadinghistorians and antiracist advocates, begins by clarifying thedifference between to the two main concepts in his study: racistand antiracist ideas. He states that a racist idea is any thoughtthat insinuates the superiority of a racial group over another inany way while antiracist idea asserts the equality of all races. This frictional dichotomy between racial hierarchy and racialequality has shaken the fissures in the plains of human relationsso violently that the gaping chasm seems unbridgeable. But forpeople like Kendi, who recognize the tremendous work to be done, naming racism and its insidious structures is only half thebattle.

Another crucial illustration to be madebefore delving deep into the racism discourse is for the meaning ofracial groups. Kendi explains that these groups arent justconfined by geographic origins and locations but its explorationshould cover gender/sexuality dynamics, social stratification, nationality, and even skin color; a distinction is necessarybetween the racial groups of black poor and white poor. From this,he further reiterates that Stamped from the Beginning is anaccount of anti-Black racism and its ever-evolving antagonismtoward specific black sub-racial groups. By juxtaposing other formsof bigotry with racist ideas, Kendi introduces the intersectionaltheory, wherein the convergence between classifications for racialgroups leads to disastrously all-encompassing conjectures. Kendielucidates by putting forth these two statements: Black people arelazy. and Poor people are lazy. Drawing from the intersectionaltheory, it can be deduced that Black poor people are lazier thanwhite poor. By injecting the concept of diverse racialised groupswithin black race alone and the innumerable ways in which theyintersect into the simple definition racist/antiracist contrariety,Kendi uncovers the complexity and sophistication of the studies onracial history.
Having established the significance ofrecognizing racialised groups, Kendi identifies a central questionthat stems from this divide and that proponents of racist andantiracist ideas have tried to answer since time immemorial: Whydo racial disparities exist and persist in American society? Theformer advances racial hierarchy as their truth blacks are at thelower echelons of the strata because they are innately inferior andthus are deserving of subjugation. In fact, no racist thinker hasever defined his ideas using the language of racism.Segregationists along with slaveholders and colonizers have longhidden behind the laws of religion, science and even commonsense tolegitimize their purported superiority. Blacks have this ingrainedgenetical flaw, thus are inferior by nature. Abolitionists, onthe other hand, argue that racial groups are created equal butblack culture and the environment of slavery has impaired theircognitive faculties thereby rendering them sub-humans. Thisinferior by nurture concept is a progressive idea set against thebackdrop of the transforming systems that oppress the blacks fromslavery to segregation to modern-day poverty and incarceration. Atthe other end of the spectrum, antiracists come into this three-waydebate by pointing out to racial discrimination as the root causeof social imbalance. Blacks are neither inferior by nature nor bynurture and they have held unto their humanity despite thedehumanizing circumstances imposed unto them by the whites becauseall races are equal. Another group has recently joined thediscourse, which Kendi calls the assimilationists. They try toreconcile the segregationists and abolitionists by asserting thatthe innate behavioral/cultural weakness of the blacks has made themthe foremost victims of discrimination. Kendi then unmasks some ofAmericas greatest icons as assimilationists their seeminglyracially progressive ideas are actually echoing of the same racistthoughts that they trying to debase.
