Inthis town, the people have high hopes for its local hockey team andits own future. They try to cover up a serious crime to make theiraspirations reality. The book opens in thesmall town of Beartown that is overshadowed by the forest that issurrounding it. The townspeople are worrying that their town isfading into oblivion and will no longer be significant in the map.The townspeople are losing their jobs. The businesses are closingin town. The only thing that gives them hope in trying times is icehockey.

The townspeople are all obsessed with the sport. The oldrink is Beartowns only building of note. Peter Andersson is thesports coach of the ice hockey team. Needless to say, the prideof Beartown junior is the ice hockey team. This team is its onlyhope of a good and prosperous future. The ice hockey players arenot acting like the hope that the town thinks they are.

Theytorment their teachers in school. They suffer no consequencesbecause they are given an elevated social status and significancein the town. These players, however, are only as important to thetown as to how well they play. They pick on their fellow studentsand they believe that they can have whatever they want. One ofthese players is Kevin. He develops a crush on Peters daughter,Maya.

She was a fellow student in school. Amat is one of the playersin the younger team. He played impressively and he gets promoted tothe junior team. Amat is also attracted to Maya but when he foundout that Kevin wants to pursue her, he backs off. Maya rejects theadvances that Kevin made towards her. However, he refused to giveup on Maya and raped her.

Amat heard the struggle between Maya andKevin. He walks in on this incident. The next day, Maya wasvisibly distressed. Kevin rebutted the questions asked by his otherteammates. He tried to convince Amat that whatever he thinks he sawis not what he thinks it is. Amat knew what he saw and he doesntknow what to do.

Meanwhile, Maya burned theclothes that she wore that night. Her mother noticed the change inher. She felt her distress. Maya refused to confide in her evenwhen it was obvious that something was wrong. Her mother would notgive up talking to her. She then sees Kevin outside.

The young manavoided her. She knew then what exactly happened to Maya. Mayasmother wants her to be honest about the rape. On the day of thefinals game, Kevin was arrested. He was taken off the teambus. The arrest had asignificant impact on the team result.

Maya then received criticalcomments on all her social media accounts. Her mother became awareof what her daughter was going through. People started blaming Mayafor the loss of the hockey team during the finals match. Even theadults in town were reluctant to believe Mayas story. They avoidedher whenever they could. Maya then felt so lonely and isolated.Even her fellow students became violent towards her.

One girl inschool threw a milk bottle at her. Nobody defended poorMaya. Meanwhile, Kevins motherfound out about what his son did. She decided to get rid of all theclothes and sheets from the night of the rape. Kevins father is abig sponsor of the team. He then claimed that everything Maya saidwas a lie.

He insisted that Maya made the whole thing up. Kevinsfather then tries to get Amat to keep quiet about what he sawhappened that night. To make everything much worse, they discoveredthat another potential sponsor withdrew his offer when he found outabout the rape allegation. Students becameincreasingly aggressive towards Maya. The adults in town turnedtheir focus on getting rid of Peter as the hockey coach. Theyblamed Peter for letting things get out of hand.
