Chapter One: Introducing The Island of SeaWomen
Picture 4 I n Lisa Sees new novel The Island of Sea Women, the author casts the readers 75 years back into the almost unknownisland in South Korea, Jeju Island.

This island has been invaded byviolent Japanese troops. They were liberated by American forces, and they were later turned over to the then un-unified regime inKorea. The soldiers of this regime raped and tortured theprotestors right before the eyes of the Americans. This is thesetting of the unusual and unsettling new novel written by thebestselling American Chinese author Lisa See. The novel is aboutthe South Korean female divers who earn their living through deepsea diving. They hold their breaths for five minutes or more whilethey fish in the deep sea.

They hunt the seas for giant octopusesand abalone. In one scene in the novel, one of their catch grabsthe heels of another and tries to pull her down. The other womendivers hack at the long tentacles of the creature and hit its headuntil it died. The girl who was dragged was half-drowned when shewas rescued. It took more than a week for the unconscious girl tohover between life and death and get back on her feet. Allthe women on the island the grandmothers, mothers and the younggirls keep the finances of their families in the black while theboys and the husbands find a much lower-paying work onshore.

AnAmerican research team comes to Jeju Island to study these women. No one can quite understand how these women do it. The team ismystified by the endurance that the women display even when theydive in ice-cold water. They are seasonal migrants to the north. They go to the wintry Vladivostok on Russias eastern seaboard. InRussia, the wages are much higher. When they dive, the temperatureof their bodies fall to almost unbelievable levels, and they set arecord that compares to nowhere else on earth. Thechief diver says that each woman diver who enters the sea isactually carrying a coffin on her back.

She adds that in theirworld, in the undersea world, they are aware of the burdens of ahard life. Every day, they are crossing between life anddeath. Nonetheless, the women divers enjoy their hazardousoccupation. They anticipate the special sensations they feel asthey dive deep into the ever-colder water. They like the thrillthat they feel when their fishing is successful, and when they goback up to the light and the seas surface after hauling a veryheavy catch. Theart of diving is now no longer practiced in Jeju Island, but it isnonetheless a part of history.

When modern life, urban employment, and high economic growth took over South Korea, this art has notsurvived. Besides the story of the women divers, the sea and fishing,Lisa Sees The Island of Sea Women is also a tale of the friendship of Mi-ja andYoung-sook. They are two young fisherwomen who have been friendssince they were young girls. When Young-sooks mother passed away, her loving friend was by her side for many days. After her mothersdeath, Young-sook never wanted to dive in the sea again. Buteventually, she had no choice but to travel to Russias easternseaboard Vladivostok to keep their family clothed and fed well.Young-sook and Mi-ja signed up for the expedition for five longyears.

Bothof the girls badly want to get married to good men, so theyrejected the Russian boys who flirted with them through buying themice cream. They realize soon enough that they are too far away fromhome. Eventually, the girls found their husbands when they wenthome. All thanks to arranged marriages in their island.Unfortunately, their husbands live far away from each other indifferent parts of the island. This meant that friends would beseparated from each other. There were no buses in the island.

Withonly a horse and cart, the distance between the friends is just toofar. Mi-ja was married to a wealthy businessman who was a horridman. She experienced violence and cruelty in the hands of herhusband. He reasoned that it was the way of the island during thosedays. On the other hand, Young-sook was married to a poor but kindand gentle man. The interaction between the four characters wasthoughtfully and painfully told.

Young-sook then decided to go backto fishing for her to pay for her husbands studies to become ateacher. Before they knew it, war arrived on their quiet island. Thewar was so horrific that the people of the island got torn betweenthe opposing Japanese and American forces. Their story becameembittered and felt like an endless atrocity. When the war ended, the tourists arrive on the island to explore its beautiful andmountainous terrain. The tourist authorities advertised that thewomen of the island were the Sirens of the Deep and the Mermaidsof Asia.
