CIRCE by Madeline Miller

Madeline Miller, the author of the international bestseller The Song of Achilles, comes to another powerful tale Circe. Circe ranks high in the bestseller list of The New York Times. Inspired by Homers Odyssey, Madeline Miller tells the tale of the mythological witch born in the house of Helios. Circe may be the daughter of the god of the sun, but she is rejected by her kin. She did not have the look nor the voice characteristic of her divine blood. Rejection and isolation with her fellow caused Circe to turn to mortals for acceptance. As she explored the world of mortals, she discovered a forbidden power to the gods witchcraft. Zeus was threatened of this newfound power so he banished Circe to the deserted island of Aiaia where Circe honed her witchcraft. This is where she encountered many of the prominent figures in all of mythology. Her visitors included Daedalus, the Minotaur, Icarus, Medea, and Odysseus. However, there is much danger for a woman who stands alone. Circe unwittingly drew the wrath of both gods and humans. She ultimately found herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful among the Olympians. She must protect those whom she loves the most, so Circe summoned all of her strength and chose once and for all where she truly belongs. She must choose between the gods whom she was born with or the mortals whom she has come to love. With Madeline Millers mesmerizing language, unforgettably vivid characters, and page-turning suspense, Circe is truly a triumph of storytelling. This novel an intoxicating epic of palace intrigue, family rivalry, love, and loss. Most of all, this novel is a celebration of the indomitable female strength in a man's world.

Chapter One: Introducing Circe
Picture 4 C irce is the newestfiction novel from the internationally bestselling author of The Song ofAchilles , Madeline Miller. The Song of Achilles retold the epic Troy through the eyes of Patroclus, whosedeath launched the duel between Achilles and Hector. His death wasavenged, and Achilles dragged Hector's body in his victory.Miller's Circe, on the other hand, was inspired by Homer's The Odyssey . Circe was born as thefirstborn of the mightiest of titans, Helios, and the beautifulnymph Perse. Though her father is the god of the sun, she did notlook nor speak like a god. Her own father describes her as dull. She is often dismissed as unattractive.

The sound of her thin voiceoffended the gods. Circe was not beautiful like her mother Perse, nor powerful like her father, Helios . She wasnt crafty likeher siblings Perses , Aetes, Perses , andPasipha. Circe was much odder looking, frail, and mortal inappearance more than divine. Her features do not match herdivinity, so she was rejected by her more beautiful, more majestickin. She was treated harshly because she was different.

Herinferior status among the gods led her to isolation. Her isolationled her to mortals. She found acceptance in a land that is not herown. As she walked with mortals, she discovered witchcraft, a powerforbidden to the gods.
Circe spoke with Prometheus about the fate of the humankind. Then, she witnessed how the gods harshly treated Prometheus. When Circewitnessed his plight, this moved her and caused her to sympathizemore with the humans.

Not long after, Circemeets another human who will make her fall in love. He was afisherman named Glaucos. His love makes her use witchcraft despiteit being forbidden to gods. Circe was frightened by the mortalityof Glaucos, and the precarity of his life. Circe then provided thehuman sailor with moly root. Legend says that this herb hassprouted as a result of the blood of the titan of the sky Uranos. She made a pharmacy , magical herbs that activatesorcery, to keep Glaucos from his mortality.

In just one night,Glaucos transformed from a human into a god. Glaucos becomes atowering, green-haired, trident-wielding god. Circe then realizedthat she does possess power, but unlike the gods, this isthe power of witchcraft. This power can transform her rivals intomonsters and menace the other gods themselves. With new power in hisfingertips, Glaucos quickly involved himself in the social order inHelios' Halls. He grows tired of plain Circe and transfers hisattention to the beautiful viper-hearted sea-nymph Scylla.

Thismade Circe extremely jealous. Circe was heartbroken, and her love turns to rage. Because of this, she fed Scylla withthe same moly root. This transformed the sea nymph into asix-headed, snake-like beast. Helios would not believe Circe whenshe admitted her fault to having tampered with Scylla's beautifulnymph form and making her into a hideous monster of the sea. However, when Aetes told the man that his children were Pharmakiwitches, Helios suddenly became unsure as to what he mustdo. After Helios spoke withZeus, the latter felt threatened by this newfound non-divine poweramong the gods.

When Zeus found out that Circe used witchcraft tocast a dark spell, he banished Circe to the remote island of Aiaia. She used her isolation to harness her dark power. She drew strengthfrom nature and her power grew stronger and stronger. She honed hernewfound occult craft. She tamed wild beasts. Aiaia may be a place ofexile, but it is destined to be the passageway of many whosefates will intertwine with hers. Circe crossed paths with many ofthe widely known figures in all of the mythology, including themessenger god Hermes, the craftsman Daedalus, the Minotaur, themurderous Medea, the doomed son Icarus, and never forget, the wilyOdysseus.

The legendary ship thatbore the golden fleece also passed through Aiaia. It was here whereOdysseus finds her while on his voyage home. Odysseus found hersurrounded by tame wolves, swine, and lions. She bewitched themafter breaking free from a sea captain who attempted to rape her.Circe was famous for turning men into half swine after giving themcheese and wine. Odysseus' crew were no different. Their hungerleft them susceptible to Circe's powers.
