C

irce is the newest fiction novel from the internationally bestselling author of The Song of Achilles , Madeline Miller. The Song of Achilles retold the epic Troy through the eyes of Patroclus, whose death launched the duel between Achilles and Hector. His death was avenged, and Achilles dragged Hector's body in his victory. Miller's Circe, on the other hand, was inspired by Homer's The Odyssey .

Circe was born as the firstborn of the mightiest of titans, Helios, and the beautiful nymph Perse. Though her father is the god of the sun, she did not look nor speak like a god. Her own father describes her as dull. She is often dismissed as unattractive. The sound of her thin voice offended the gods. Circe was not beautiful like her mother Perse, nor powerful like her father, Helios. She wasnt crafty like her siblings Perses, Aetes, Perses, and Pasipha. Circe was much odder looking, frail, and mortal in appearance more than divine. Her features do not match her divinity, so she was rejected by her more beautiful, more majestic kin. She was treated harshly because she was different. Her inferior status among the gods led her to isolation. Her isolation led her to mortals. She found acceptance in a land that is not her own. As she walked with mortals, she discovered witchcraft, a power forbidden to the gods.

Circe spoke with Prometheus about the fate of the humankind. Then, she witnessed how the gods harshly treated Prometheus. When Circe witnessed his plight, this moved her and caused her to sympathize more with the humans.

Not long after, Circe meets another human who will make her fall in love. He was a fisherman named Glaucos. His love makes her use witchcraft despite it being forbidden to gods. Circe was frightened by the mortality of Glaucos, and the precarity of his life. Circe then provided the human sailor with moly root. Legend says that this herb has sprouted as a result of the blood of the titan of the sky Uranos. She made a pharmacy, magical herbs that activate sorcery, to keep Glaucos from his mortality. In just one night, Glaucos transformed from a human into a god. Glaucos becomes a towering, green-haired, trident-wielding god. Circe then realized that she does possess power, but unlike the gods, this is the power of witchcraft. This power can transform her rivals into monsters and menace the other gods themselves.

With new power in his fingertips, Glaucos quickly involved himself in the social order in Helios' Halls. He grows tired of plain Circe and transfers his attention to the beautiful viper-hearted sea-nymph Scylla. This made Circe extremely jealous. Circe was heartbroken, and her love turns to rage. Because of this, she fed Scylla with the same moly root. This transformed the sea nymph into a six-headed, snake-like beast. Helios would not believe Circe when she admitted her fault to having tampered with Scylla's beautiful nymph form and making her into a hideous monster of the sea. However, when Aetes told the man that his children were Pharmaki witches, Helios suddenly became unsure as to what he must do.
