During that time, she wasunemployed, she was drinking too much, and was drowning infinancial troubles. She was losing grip on her duties as a wife anda mom. One fateful night changed everything when she saw atelevision commercial that showed a rocket launch 54321 go!At first, she thought that it was stupid, but the next morning,she decided to launch herself like a rocket out of bed. Aftercounting down from five, she immediately stood up.

Thats how shediscovered The 5 Second Rule. It changed her life. In the present, as shespreads the awareness of the 5-second rule, she defines it as animpulse to act on a goal. Robbins says that you must physicallymove your body within 5 seconds or the brain will kill the idea.The 5 Second Rule helps override ones feelings. This is a tacticcalled a psychological intervention. In the book, Robbinsshared three lessons about the 5 Second Rule.

Lesson 1 states: The5 Second Rule builds courage like compounding interest. Robbinssays that when we read the biographies of historical figures andthe stories of heroes, we tend to view them as people ofextraordinary bravery and courage. However, the truth is they werejust as anxious, shy and afraid as normal people are. The bigdifference is that throughout their lives, they made smallcourageous choices that added up and made them who they are that weremember. Robbins cited the examples of Rosa Parks and MartinLuther King Jr. Neither of them knew the results of theiractions, but they went with the impulse.

Robbins says thatmore courage follows each small act of courage. It compounds andone day you can look back on a courageous life. Lesson 2 states: You canstop waiting for the right time. Robbins says that the righttime will never come. She gave two universal facts: (1) We all wantto change our lives. (2) We spend most of our time waiting for thatmagical change.

There is three reason why that awaited time willnever come: (1) Change is always new. (2) It always comes withuncertainty. (3) Its always scary. Lesson 3 states: Feelingsare just suggestions, which is why you should use psychologicalintervention to override them. This lesson starts with a question:Why do we wait so much anyway? Robbins cited world-renownedneuroscientist Antonio Damasio to answer this. In his bookentitled DescartesError , he writes that his researchindicated that as much as 95% of our decisions are ultimatelyguided and decided by feelings and not facts.

Therefore, he callsus feeling machines that think, not thinking machines that feel.The simple reason why we often dont act at all is that we dontfeel like it. To solve this everyday problem, Robbins suggeststhat we should consider feelings as suggestions, rather thanabsolutes. This allows us to override them, as with the 5 SecondRule.
